Okay, okay, I really need to take everything one step at a time.
Let me start out by saying that getting a violin for myself might take a year or so. I'm currently saving up to buy a new guitar - one that won't get all screwed up every time I use it - and while I was hoping to get enough by my birthday next month it seems that won't happen.
Anyway, I was just wondering about violin stuff.
Ever since I read and watched Sherlock Holmes () things I fell in love with the violin. It's such a beautiful instrument, and while I know it takes a great deal of practice to gain the level of expertise Holmes has, I still want to play it someday.
I'm just curious about price, lessons, maintenance, that sort of thing. Anything that might be useful for me to know.
Thanks!

I played the violin for about 4 years now (around 6th grade). I've always loved the feel of the musical instrument, and that's why I'm continuing on until 12th grade

Since I had rented a violin at first (now I own a newer version), I only paid about $20 a month. Some of my friends used those payments and had bought a newer instrument, but I didn't do that. I never took private lessons, I practiced on my own and became awesome at playing it! Maintenance, you just to play it once in a while, depending on the temperature of the room. The strings do get out of tune badly, especially in very cold/hot weather, and don't bump it into anything.

If you want to know more things, just reply back!

I'd love to learn to play and I'm wondering if I could learn via teaching videos? It would certainly be cheaper than lessons, I'd like to learn with my step daughters who are 6 & 8. Would they need a smaller instrument tho?? The 6 year old is as tall as the 8 year old!

As a musical instrument no, as something to annoy others sometimes, depends on how evil I'm feeling

Lessons are worth it. I was self-taught on piano and recorders, and learned flute in school band but never had lessons on any of those. When I got I violin, I took suzuki lessons. You learn faster and better, and there is a lot that you get from lessons that you won't get from a book or most videos or just on your own, especially on the violin. The violin responds to my mood and emotions so much more than any of my other instruments, and at first if I had anxiety or was tense for any reason, I could not get a decent tone on the violin, but my teacher was able to tell me what to adjust and get a much better sound. Some things you can learn from a video, but it does help to have some live lessons.

A couple of other things about playing the violin are that playing it often makes a huge difference in how the instrument sounds and staying in tune. I had a cheap violin at first, and I didn't know how to play it so I didn't much, and trying to tune it was awful. It could not hold a pitch. Once I started playing and going to lessons, the instrument got better too. I still got a better one when I had the chance.

Another thing is cut your fingernails on your left hand as short as you can get them. You might think they are short enough if you cut them last week, but they are not. It makes a difference.

Thanks everyone!
I'm going to look into it. Of course, lessons might be expensive but again, I have time to plan!

Update: Just looked up lessons for my state.
The nearest places are miles and miles away. In Chicago. Like hours away from where I am.
Looks like if I wanna learn I'm going to have to ask around. Blech. Being social.

I'd love to learn how to play someday, even though I'm not sure on if I have the hand coordination . I used to play the recorder though, but then all my skill vanished over time due to lack of practice. I'll get back to that when I have time.

When I have needed lessons for an instrument and lived in the middle of nowhere, checking a local music store (will have postings/references), or a church or school for a music director or teacher might have references for someone nearby that is willing to give lessons.
