generality - definition of generality by The Free Dictionary
Quote:
A generalization (or generalisation) of a concept is an extension of the concept to less-specific criteria. It is a foundational element of logic and human reasoning.[citation needed] Generalizations posit the existence of a domain or set of elements, as well as one or more common characteristics shared by those elements. As such, they are the essential basis of all valid deductive inferences. The process of verification is necessary to determine whether a generalization holds true for any given situation. Quote:
We all generalize about things. That is, we all make broad comments about a group of people or things. We say things like:
"No matter what they say, salesmen don't care a bit about the people they sell to. They just want your money."
We say this because we have met many salesmen, heard from our friends about many salesmen, or been a salesman ourselves once. We generalize every day, and it is very useful. (See, that last sentence was a generalization.) Generalizations
This forum talks about why we generalize: What is generalization? How and why do we generalize? - WebAnswers.com

Then there is the controversy involving the political correctness of using generalizations.
Quote:
[Political correctness is a perversion of morality and a contradiction of reality that requires constant state interventions for its successful implementation. We do not want America to become a country with a non-reality-based ideology enforced by state power. Political correctness threatens free society by encouraging “group-think” and by attaining conformity through intimidation and force. We must fight political correctness by striving for truth through the use of reality-based rational and logical arguments. Because political correctness is crippling Western society, it is imperative that we recapture language, reestablish the private ownership of the means of expression, challenge PC concepts, and stand up in defense of reality. Political Correctness Threatens Free Society
Generalities are a concern when used to denigrate rather than as a shortcut or when the particular supplants its basis. They will remain as part of our manner of communication.

Yes, it's all about survival. I believe that most of the actions we take that come from our ego is action based upon fear. We need to believe we're safe in order to believe our survival is ensured. I see actions based upon fear as being in opposition to actions based upon spiritual faith.
