******DONT READ THIS IF YOU ARE A SMOKER BECAUSE YOU MAY GET OFFENDED. THIS IS FOR ANSWERS NOT FOR DEBATE*******
Just to let you know I do not in any way dislike smokers for I date one and I have many friends and loved ones that smoke. I dislike the habit, because it affects them and it affects people surrounding them as well I have an issue. I don't know what to do If there's really anything I can do I have lived in the same apartment for 6 years now. I am a non-smoker, yet now I am surrounded by all smokers. On both sides of me, above and below me. I'm boxed in. Anyway, I started to notice that my apartment was smelling like smoke and that's wrong. Myself and my daughter have to suffer because they smoke. Your probably saying get over it, but I can't. Also, I can't even open my windows or door to get fresh air during the day or night, because it will smell like smoke. My daughter has Asthma Why should we be the one's suffering from there habit They have the right to do what they want, as I do. Yet I don't feel like I really do have that right. Were back to the fact that I can't even open my windows and doors to get fresh air, because I am surrounded by smokers Why should I be the one pushed out of my apartment(to move)? Where can I go they are everywhere? I feel trapped It's the smell seeping through the walls that's got me the most I have people come over and visit and they have made the comment to me "DO YOU SMOKE?" now that's annoying and aggravating. I also had to get higher renters insurance because of this. Once again I feel it's me suffering. My daughter complains to me on a daily basis. I just tell her to stop because there is nothing I can do. I have tried air purifiers, fans, in-sense, air fresheners. Once again I am suffering and spending money to support there habit. CAN I DO ANYTHING AT ALL? OR JUST DEAL WITH IT Upset, JLove __________________ |

Maybe, explain to them nicely about your daughter. Then ask if they could get smokeless ash trays? That may help some.

I'm a smoker, but I can definitely relate to your issue. I don't take any offense at what you are saying at all.
There are air purifiers you can purchase that take the smoke out of the air you are breathing. I would also get a letter from your doctors' regarding your daughter's asthma and send it to your landlord. Maybe they will be willing to make the apartment complex "smoke free". It would be in their best interest and everyone who lives there if they did that. Some landlords are reasonable, some are not. I'm sorry you are having to go through that. I hope things will work out for you and your daughter. Good Luck to you! Hugssssssss J |

JLove,
You can break your lease because your daughter's very life is at stake. Your landlord is bound by laws that make him provide his renters a healthy place to live. Move as soon as you can. Hi jlove,
I'm a smoker but I understand where you're coming from. I think it would be great if an apartment complex offered smoking or nonsmoking buildings. I don't know what your apartment complex is like. If it's just one big apartment building or separate buildings in a larger complex. At one time, my daughter complained about smelling the neighbor's smoke, too. In a perfect world, no one would be smoking but we all know the world isn't perfect. For you and your daughter's sake, I hope you find a solution that benefits you. Calm |

hope your landlord will help, it is also damaging his property, uk is going smoke free in june so there wont be so many lighting up in public __________________ No kind action ever stops with itself. Well, thanks for all of your advice. I spoke with the Apartment manger and she said that there is nothing that they can do.
They rent here to, they pay there rent, and therefore if they are in front of there apartment they can pretty much do whatever they want if it is not against the law. There is no law in Arizona regarding smoking except for in the work place I can't afford to move. So that's not even an option right now. My option is basically leaving my windows and doors shut and cranking up my A/C and paying an extremely high bill. No matter what season it may be here. I dislike the fact that I can't even enjoy a beautiful day on my porch because of my neighbors. I can't even enjoy fresh air in my house because of my neighbors. This is Bologna. Hi JLove,
I can identify. I have quit smoking but even when I did smoke-I use to live in an apartment where the back bedroom was surrounded by an enclosed alleyway. I lived on the 3rd floor and the neighbors on the first floor smoked. Some how all the cigarette smoke would chimney up the alleyway into my windows. The smell annoyed the hell out of me when I wasn't smoking and I had to turn off my fan (although it was summer) because it was sucking in all of the smell from the cigarette smoke. I think getting a REALLY GOOD air purifier is the answer. Not one of those cheap ones but one from a company like Sharper Image works well and would get the smoke out of your air. You can also try putting a fan in the window so that the air blows out-open up a window from a side of the house where there's no smoke coming in to use to supply the fan with fresh air. I wouldn't complain to your landlord unless you're ready to move if he says "Nope, can't do anything about it." Cause if the neighbors find out, they may retaliate-that's the last thing you need. They may smoke more, intentionally, just to harrass you and get you back for complaining to the landlord. I'm sorry you have to go through this. Maybe one or two of the neighbors will move. Oops, sorry. I didn't see your post above mine until now. I hope she doesn't let them know you said something.
Can't you go on your porch when they're not out there? I'm really sorry about all this bologna, JLove. I feel kinda guilty 'cause I use to smoke-I never realized how much it irritated and hurt others. |
