Did you have unrealistic expectations then? Did these expectations get shattered?

I thought that a happy future was a guarantee, thus I did not prepare for reality.

Who can say what hopes and expectations are unrealistic? I think some of mine were misguided but not crazy. Early on I wanted to be a rock star. Later it evolved into a desire to be a good musician and respected by my peers. Looking back I see that as better.
How did you acquire this expectation of a guaranteed happy future?

It is a well known fact that by the year 2000 space travel will become routine. By 2014 I will be a capitan of an intergalactic space mission.

And yet as of 1989 I do not realise that I have to care about my interests and my future, and that choices I make now may drastically change my situation in 25 years.
