This time Intel-based. My current one is great 'n' all, but I'd like to go for Intel, and I've been getting CPU overheating problems, and need to sort that anyway, so this is a good time to just upgrade. Already got an ASUS 760 OC and 750 Corsair PSU, plus 8GB Corsair XM3 RAM, so I just need something like the following:

Any other computer geeks who have any thoughts on this build idea? The last time I fitted an Intel CPU, was a P2 or P3, so I'm pretty anxious and not feeling too confident about that. >.<

I buy old Dell Optiplex buisness computers, I get them dirt cheap on ebay. Then I upgrade everything, the only think that holds me back is the motherboard.

I know this won't help you much but I just designed a system using this website Configure Computers, Custom Computer Builder, System Builders .

My design came in at $14,600 US - Before tax. Yikes! That's more than I make in a year!

Your specs look good except for the cooler. I would definitely put out a few more pounds and go for a higher quality. There are better ones from Cooler Master available right on the link you provided.

I upgraded my cooler to a top of the line one and it made a difference of 25 C. I was amazed at the difference.

Despite it's impressively-low price, it's a hell of a cooler. It's a very, very popular cooler, presumably because of the price and what it actually offers. (I base this on my very often seeing it mentioned by people with great rigs and lots of experience, over the last couple of years) I've seen people with decent overclocked i5s barely breaking a sweat with that cooler. I could go for the Noctua one that people seem to use a lot, but if the 212 seems to work well for so many, then surely I can't go wrong. xD If the i5 is as good as people have claimed all these [insert time-frame], then I think I won't need to even overclock.

I've been having a nightmare with motherboards and cases, but I keep coming back to the Zalmon Z11. I saw one today at a computer warehouse (job I may be getting there) and was quite impressed. That said, there's also a nice Corsair one that would fit the 212 nicely and it's a pretty good case. Then there's the issue of my rather nice desktop (cleaned it up myself, after it was left abandoned xD) and the measurements of the case. >.<

Then of course there's the money. See, I don't really game much these days. This is just a treat for all my hard work. (plus my CPU is overheating quite badly, so I could do with killing two birdies with one stone) And you never know, I might find I get into games more at a later date.

'o.O Ditto, I imagine. I have no intention of building something that OTT. xD As it stands, the build I have in mind is already hella powerful, like, I consider it to be top-notch unless you want crazy-high resolutions (for me, even 1080p is kinda overkill, and I remember sticking strongly by 900p for ages xD) 3D, multi-monitor gaming, etc.

i5 4690K? From what I've seen/read, that CPU is a monster, and I've learned that the i5 is pretty much the sweet spot for gaming - lots of people are saying that buying the i7 for gaming is just a waste of money, and from what I've read, I'd have to concur. I guess it's down to what the i7 offers with regards to its price, and I've heard "the difference isn't worth the cost", at least to me. My GPU (ASUS 760 OC - I've yet to try overclocking it) isn't as generous as some out there, but with a really decent CPU supporting it, it can nail BF4 on ultra with 40-120fps I think it is. (60+ with some tweaking of the settings )
