I played the violin when I was in grade school for 5 years and it was great. The thing that helped was that I had structure, I had to bring my violin to class and play each day at least a little bit. I did chose to take the class though.

I picked it up again recently, and I'm having a difficult time getting back into it, it's not the material, it's just that I am impatient and want to be as good as I was before or better but that won't happen overnight obviously, and I have to stick to it.

Also, does anyone here have trouble sticking with hobbies? I go through phases where I think I will be wonderful at art, times I think I will become great at Italian.

I like hobbies because they help me focus my thoughts when they are racing around! I like to crochet, garden and do sudoku or jigsaw puzzles but I think playing an instrument or learning another language would be awesome!!!

I've dabbled in various languages, but have a hard to time just sticking to learning one before moving on to the next one.

I cycle through hobbies and interests but it's usually one at a time and I hyperfocus on it. That was one of the traits that got me diagnosed with autism. I haven't really talked to other autistics about it, but I tend to cycle through interests faster than another autistic friend I have. I was obsessed with religion at one point and made a blog to write in while I tried every different church I could find, from catholic to wicca, but only kept it up for a few weeks, I got really obsessed with the Canadian aboriginal movement Idle No More for a few weeks a couple of years ago, I was obsessed with poetry for long enough to write a few books but haven't written many poems any more, I took up watercolor painting as a complete beginner in December and already people are paying me for my art.

I cycle between them quickly, but I tend to hyper focus and get really immersed in them.

I think it's ok not to always stick with a hobby, even though unfinished projects can make you feel discouraged-we were all told as kids to finish what we start-but I think allowing ourselves to move on to something different is healthy because it's good for our mind to learn something new. It's good to finish something but even if we don't the process of enjoying the hobby is good too I think!
