Ok, so it says on the community college website that "Only students who have completed the pre-requisite coursework may apply for acceptance to the Program."

Does this mean I can't go to this Community College and study the Vet Tech program because I have not studied all the pre-requisites yet? And if so, where do they expect me to go to study these pre-requisites? And why can't I just take the pre-requisites as part of the program?

I am very confused here. I was really hoping I could do this program and I would be very sad if I couldn't study to be a Vet Tech because I do not have these pre-requisites.

The best advice I can think of is - phone the college direct before jumping to conclusions to find out what the pre-requisite coursework is exactly ... maybe it is something you will still be able to do (the pre-requisite coursework, that is). Maybe there is a way you can still do the Vet Tech program, pending on what exactly this coursework is.

Unless I miss my guess, you have to go to that same Community College and get your basics done like English 101, some math and science, etc. After those are out of the way, you have to have a certain GPA to apply for acceptance into the Vet Tech program.

It's not that you can't go there for that program. Just that it's a more advanced program and you have to get some other coursework done before applying for that specific program.

usually when it says this it also lists what courses must be taken first.

example (not a real course just making one up to show what it means...)

503 feline diseases cancer
Only students who have completed the pre-requisite coursework may apply for acceptance to the Program. pre-requiste 502 feline anatomy

which means who ever wants to take course number 503 which is named feline diseases, cancer must have taken and passed the course number 502 named feline anatomy.
if you havent taken feline anatomy you cant take feline diseases.

my suggestion is look closely at the course descriptions it will tell you which courses you have to take first.

if this is your first time in college my suggestion is go to the colleges registrars office. its these peoples job to sit down with you to register you for your classes. they can help you fill out the registration papers for the courses and make sure you dont sign up for something that needs a pre requite course before the one you want.

another suggestion is when students first enter college they are assigned a guidance counselor. this person is the one who you tell which degree you want and they show you which courses are the first year electives and non elective courses for that degree and how many courses you will need to take per semester to meet your goal of when you want to graduate with that degree.

also if this is your first year in college your guidance counselor can tell you when and where on the campus is your Orientation. all freshmen must attend an orientation class about the college, the rules of the college, how to register, how to handle things like sexual assault on campus in dorms or at college parties, living on or off campus, the colleges drugs and alcohol standards, how to go about getting special accommodations for handicapped and mentally challenged people....all kinds of things new students need to be informed about and sign papers about.

You have to make an appointment with advisor/ guidance counselor and they will tell you exactly what to take. You might need to take placement test and take general courses etc etc do not register for classes without meeting with a counselor

Typically there is a detailed description of which class to take in what sequence, but still meet with advisor

wanted to add that the terms Elective means courses you get to choose and non electives are courses that are required...

example an elective for my psych major was an art course called weaving.

an example of a non elective for my psych major that I absolutely hated was a biology and the corresponding biology lab, and one I loved a physical educational class (think gym class...vollyball, tennis, jogging, boating...and other physical activities class)

every degree is comprised of classes you get to choose (electives) and classes that are required (non electives) you have to have so many of each with a passing grade before you can get that degree.

as for where to take those pre requisites ....you can take them at any college you choose to register at. then "transfer" the passing grade credits to the college that you want to graduate with your degree from.

example i "transferred" some online classes and other classes from one college to another. but remember in order for the classes to be transferable they have to meet the colleges grade\GPA before they will accept it as counting on your degree...

example (not using actual numbers for that you would need to contact your colleges for their standards) if i took a psych class at collage ABC and received a grade\GPA of 70\2.0 and college DEF's transfer standard was 90\GPA 3.0 then that class would not be accepted at DEF as transferable

my point in order for a class to be transferred to another college it must meet the standards of that college.

I agree with those who suggested you call the school and schedule an appointment with an adviser.

That said, our local community college has a vet tech program. One of my vets is an adviser and instructor. I suspect you have to have taken certain math and science classes in order to understand what you are being taught in the vet tech classes. The reason you need to take the prerequisites first, not at the same time, is because you need the basic understanding. It would be like trying to put a roof on a house before you build the walls that support the roof.
