I, The Skeezyks, wish to declare that I HATE my dental hygienist! Over the years, she has turned me into a compulsive tooth brusher! Every time I go in for a cleaning, she spends the whole time I'm there complaining about my teeth being stained. (I drink black tea.) And since I am exquisitely sensitive to criticism of any kind, I try to do whatever I can to avoid it to the greatest extent possible.

As a result, brushing my teeth has become an obsession! As soon as I finish a cup of tea, I run for my toothbrush. I use whitening toothpaste. I struggle to get into every nook & cranny. I use mouthwash. I CAN'T STAND IT! However, I do have to admit that all of her complaining has resulted in The Skeezyks having a pretty darn clean set of choppers!

The Buddhist nun, Pema Chödrön teaches that the people in our lives who most irritate us, the ones who make us angry, who "get our goat", show us where we're stuck. She has written: "The people who repel us unwittingly show us the aspects of ourselves that we find unacceptable, which otherwise we can't see... They mirror us and give us the chance to befriend all of that ancient stuff that we carry around..." (Pg. 77- Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living)

So, thank you, R******. I am a better Skeezyks for having you in my life!

Me too - she is Greek and when I wince and get all whimpery because it hurts like hell, she says in her country men are strong and brought up to fight the Turk and don't complain.

I have just run the electric toothbrush all round the teeth and where the tooth meets the gum and am about to use a little brush (that we also use for the cat's teeth) to clean that tedious little pocket behind the back teeth where food lodges.

However in truth the three treatments I have per year (at £150 per pop) have led to an end to bleeding gums, wobbly teeth or extractions.

Ugh, I can relate. After a root canal, I went to the dental / oral hygienist for a cleaning (as recommended by my sweet dentist). It was an awful experience. She was mean, rude and judgmental from the start. When she was cleaning, she was applying brute force and was hacking away at my very sensitive receding gums. Hubby was with me, keeping me calm throughout the dentist appointments but we didn't think he need be there for the cleaning. We were wrong. I raised my hands several times for her to stop and give me a break but she just carried on hacking. I was distraught! I don't care if my teeth fall out, I'll never go back!

Crying isn't a sign of weakness. It's a sign of having tried too hard to be strong for too long.

Sorry to hear this. My first treatments were quite deep so I had a local anaesthetic - I can see no reason why you should not have one too. Gum disease is not a trivial matter.

This.

Only stronger: I HATE DENTISTS VISITS! I have TMJ/arthritis in my jaw (as well as everywhere else since age approx 14) and having someone crank around on my jaw is guaranteed to make me very. UPSET. I leave w/a migraine, tears in my eyes, take some serious pain drugs and go to bed fo the rest of the day/week/life.

I can handle huge pain anywhere in my body (good thing too) EXCEPT from the neck up. So what did The Ruler of The Universe decide to give me? Yup, chronic conditions which = intense pain in the head.

I was lolling pretty hard at your descriptions of teeth-brushing etc, tho, Skeez. Me too, for years! lol ANYTHING to keep from spending one extra minute in dentist's chair! (i also have needle phobia, so you can imagine)

Oh... & by the way... I forgot to mention... dental floss! I go through A TON of it! I should own stock in a dental floss manufacturing company!

Growing up, my parents didn't really pay any attention to my teeth. My father had lost most of his & my mother just let hers rot. I only got taken to the dentist if I had a toothache. By the time I was in my early twenties, my teeth started to break. Each time one broke, the dentist would just yank it outta there. And every time this happened, it would freak me out! So, after a few of these, I finally figured out that, if I took better care of my teeth, maybe I wouldn't lose so many of them! So that was the beginning. And, over the years I have become increasingly compulsive about the whole process...
