It bothers me that so many everyday people are afraid to be associated with the name marijuana. As I see it because society stigmatizes drugs. It's an unthinking programmed reaction thing. You see it all the time even in people close to the mj scene. It gets mentioned and they clam up afraid to have anyone think they are in any way associated with it.
As an auto-reaction we can learn to observe our own reactions. It seems so much better when the subject comes up to just maintain a neutral attitude. Which by the way indicates mental freedom.
I play with some guys in a rock/jazz band where of course weed is a known player and yet when the name of anyone associated with the stuff comes up some of these guys shrink like I guess violets at dusk. There will always be these unthinking types but I try not to be one. As the story goes the erb got it's bad name from politicians-who else?-pointing a finger at the Mexicans along the Texas border in the past century. In reality it's no more intoxicating than beer and has been used all over the world.

I am on the other end. Personally, I view any "recreational" drug use as selfish, arrogant and careless, having witnessed my entire life countless people utterly destroy their lives and irreparably harm their children and relatives.

I saw a news article where some guy stoned off his *** was filming a toddler with a joint and telling the poor thing to "inhale".

No, I am not going to personally condone drug usage like that. It's sickening.

I'm pro legalization with regulation.

Marijuana is not harmless as a drug, but I don't believe it's any more harmful than alcohol. Some people will use either safely. Some people will abuse either.

But it makes no sense to me to criminalize people for a relatively small amount for recreational use of a relatively harmless drug.

Once I had experience in the chat here. People were discussing anti-psychotics and other heavy duty drugs and me and my friend started talking about weed. Were told not to discuss "drugs"...........

Some people just aren't into illegal or recreational drugs of any kind. Just as you have your mental freedom, so do they.

Some good quotes you have there. and the reply to not discuss drugs was just by someone with no more sense than any other nut running the nut house but trying to appear as one who knows. It just goes with so many of the observations of great thinkers who advise things like to always question authority. A favorite image of mine is of Don Rickels portraying the gullible person nodding yes with their mouth hanging open in agreement.

I guess my point is not to condone the erb but to point out how people fear criticism, fear to express an opinion contradictory to a mass opinion-and especially to one held by cops and school administrators and parents-them with no experience in the matter. I am mostly anti weed after having used it for over 50 years but I don't crawl in a hole to hide from the subject.

It bothers me that people think pot is harmless. It is proven to lower one's own intelligence and cause permanent brain damage and memory loss if used by teenagers whose brains are still developing. This concerns me.

As for discussing illegal drug use on the forum/chat room, it's against the guidelines set forth by the staff. Since marijuana is legal in some parts of the US and illegal in others, this rule is kind of questionable at best. Doc_John told me that discussion of marijuana IS permissable, but to keep such discussions from dominating the chat/forums.

I believe kreg's thesis is the stigmatization of marijuana, not whether it's beneficial or harmful.

Stigma creates closets. We all have closets. If you refrain from telling someone you have a mental illness because you fear a negative reaction you're in the closet.

A closet is really an avoidance of a hard conversation. That's it.

So have that hard conversation. It will most likely be the easiest hard conversation you ever have.

Well, bottom line about it is using pot will always be stimatized because of the people most often represented using it (or should I say "abusing" it?).

I thank you for your reply and for this forum. I totally agree with you on the ill effect of weed. Peer pressure is the driving force mainly IMO. I see something not quite right in my original comment motive and you have helped me.

What bothers me more is that until it has been legalized, the medical version of it, police would occassionaly haunt down seniors who planted it for their use with their problems. I guess because hunting down the dealers in the downtown Prague is too risky and seniors with arthritis or parkinsons do no have guns.

Well now we have medical marijuana legal here. For insane cost, that people who will benefit from it cannot afford.

And funnily enough, it's so easy to get weed and drugs in Prague, all travel pages talk about it. But it's not legal. I mean, ****ing legalize it, tax it and have profit on those foreigners who come here only to party. Our deficit budget would be gone in few years...

I have noticed there is also peer pressure to be pro-marijuana sometimes. Basically it seems like marijuana is a political football right now. The only safe thing is to clam-up if somebody mentions the topic, because the conversation is likely to offend somebody present - no matter what is said.

Similar situations here. It's legal in some states but you can't buy it or sell it or bring it in. Maybe Santa will drop some down your chimney.

I don't support marijuana anymore than I do smoking cigarettes the only difference is in my state it's still illegal so it's use is not widely talked about. Personally I avoid controversial conversations.
