I have been planning to go out and find a place to volunteer. A particular place actually. I put it off last week because I got depressed. I have been diagnosed with PTSD, MDD, and Anxiety. Because of this I do not work. I have SA too and it's very hard for me to be with groups of people but today I'm doing it. I've been working with my therapist with CBT and it has done wonders for me. That is why I think I'm ready for this. I will only volunteer once a week ( no need to overwhelm myself ) for now. I guess I'm here writing this to fire myself up this morning. I don't want my nerves to get the best of me.
Anyone else volunteering?

Good for you!

I volunteer as a mediator at my support group. I also attend a dementia ward in a hospital. I actually started as a visitor to a patient and began helping out and spending time with other patients during these visits. I now go weekly volunteering as a companion to patients and assist on the ward performing light duties.

It gives me a sense of contributing. It also has been great in building up my ability to manage my anxiety and work towards the goal of one day returning to work.
Thanks for this!

In November, when my current breakdown started, I was so isolated and lonesome...there were many, many hours in which I either laid in bed or just stared at the floor. I decided I would give volunteering a try. In the past, volunteering was very rewarding for me. So I went to vol orientation at my beautiful local library - which is conveniently located a block from where I live. Since then, I've been volunteering twice/week (2 hours per shift). It gives me a good feeling, to belong somewhere and to be doing something useful.

Good for you, MelloJoy!I think it takes even more energy and commitment to volunteer than to go to a regular job. Be very proud of yourself!
Thanks for this!

Excellent! Volunteering is awesome. To benefit others is the ultimate and most important achievement of the human being. You will also get to know a lot of people and grow from the contact with them.

I am inspired by your thread, makes me want to volunteer again. Hugs

Well, I did it! I just got back and it was such a good feeling to be able to talk to the activity director one on one. There is paperwork to be filled out and I have to have a background check ran. After that I'm good to go. Thank you all for the kind words, encouragement, and support.

Good for you!! I hope that it goes well. Once my physical health improves and we move out of state I hope to do some volunteering myself. I used to do it a lot while I was working and loved it. So rewarding. Best of luck to you!!

Good for you. I hope it goes really well. I volunteer once a week, at a suicide crisis line. It's demanding but rewarding.
