Well, Best Buy stores have "Geek Squad" to fix computers, not "Nerd Squad" so that tells you a little something about which is more socially acceptable?

It's funny but I've always thought it was 'geek' which was the cooler, off-beat, term. Nerd seemed to be a derogatory term. I'm the UK though so it may differ culturally.

Having said that I think Vonmoxie nails it when she says:

Personally, I take almost everything as a compliment. Because even when people are trying to challenge me, I figure it's because they see me as worth challenging. If they're trying to take me down a notch, it's because of something in them that's unfulfilled.
