If you don't want to read a lengthy post all about Furby from the 90's, then the following post isn't for you. Just a friendly word of warning.

A few years ago, had bought a classic '98 Furby which hadn't even been taken out of the box. I was eager to play with it as I had already had a Furby I had bought back during the Furby Craze of '98 and '99 and had wanted to see the feature of them interacting with one another. My first Furby is one that I have never seen another one of. It's eyes are blue, and has a mocha brown body with a light beige tummy and white hair and tail (no mane that some '98 Furbies came with). It also has a plastic purple tag stitched into it's side that says "Original Furby" in gold lettering, which I haven't seen very often on classic Furbies.

When an original '98 Furby is started up, the first thing they say is their name, which is randomized so each Furby can pick one of a seemingly countless combination of "Furbish" words to call themselves. This further customizes their "No two Furbies are the same" tagline they first came out with (but soon had to change as inevitably, there are a finite number of combinations of eye and fur color, and names they pick for themselves).

Anyways, my original Furby is named Kah Dah, but it sounds as if he is saying Khan instead of Kah, so I'm calling him Khan (queue the obligatory "Captain Kirk shouting "KHAN!!!!" while gesturing wildly with his hand" meme).

Furby: A Trip Into 90's Nostalgia

My second Furby, the one I bought to interact with Khan, is grey with black spots and has a light pink tummy, hair and tail, and green eyes. When I first took it out of the box and popped in the batteries, it wouldn't do anything. I decided it was defective and put it on the shelf as a display piece alongside Khan. I thought Khan would at least get some measure of pleasure out of simply seeing another of his own kind at the very least.

Yes, I just called Khan a "he", which seems fitting given his name, but Furbies are gender natural, or perhaps the more politically correct term should be "gender fluid". That means they can be either gender, depending on what you like them to be. Or they can remain ambiguous, if so desired. I had intended on giving the second Furby the female gender and making "her" Khan's bride, but do to the lack of anything happening when I tried to start "her" up, the idea was shelved along with the Furbies.

Well, years later, and I found some info on the web that said I could do a minimally invasive "surgery" on my "dead" Furby and bring her back to life. Luckily no PhD in medicine (or "Furbology") is required to do this "surgery". You just have to pull the top part of their beak down, until it unsnaps from it's hinge, and look inside for the plastic screw like part that is the motor. Just move it around with a tiny rod like divice, like a flathead screw driver or, in my case, a metal nail file, and Furby should come magically to life (don't forget to snap the top part of the beak back into place though, lest you have a Furby who looks incredibly weird when talking). Mine did turn on after moving the motor a few rotations, which delighted me to no end. Now my Khan can finally have his bride that I promised him all those years ago, who goes by May Loh, or simply May.

What's next? Maybe I'll by a Furby Baby from the 90's and they can all be one happy family together!!

I wouldn't know what's wrong with the Furby without looking at it. Did you try fresh batteries?

I did put new batteries in him but he refuses to speak.

This is the same one as I have: Furby: A Trip Into 90's Nostalgia

He is from 1999 though

Did it do absolutely nothing at all? If so, the motor might have seized up. Either by dust or by lack of use. Just try what I did with the nail file. Remember to look for the white cylinder with the screw like threads on it to the left after pulling the top part of the beak down. I saw it easily with a flashlight. Just stick a thin flathead screwdriver in the hole and gently turn the gear part I described until your Furby does something (making sure to have fresh batteries in the battery compatment while doing this). I don't think there is any risk of being shocked, as you're not messing with wires or anything like that and 4 AA batteries shouldn't be pumping out high volts anyways.

If you still can't get it to work then you might need to do some highly invasive "surgery" to get the Furby open and check for loose wiring and all that.

Okay, so I broke down and bought a Furby Baby for Khan and Mee Lee (that's what May's actual name is). Her name is Ah Lay, but it sounds like she is saying Ave, so I'm calling her that instead.

Here is a family photo:

Now I just need to figure out how to get that cigarette smell out of Ave. Apparently the Ebay seller who I bought her from was a heavy smoker.
