Today I worked 12 hours for two clients. One was legally blind and deaf, the other had dementia and was aware of and depressed about her condition. I accepted the positions to show I was a good employee and that 12 hours working with 4 hours of overtime AKA $250 before tax was enough to make the trip worthwhile. The experience made me realize that caregiving is my true calling and passion. Here is what I wrote about my day...
Things I've learned today: How to spoon-feed pills with applesauce How NOT to spoon-feed pills with applesauce Clients can choke on water, thus, applesauce My tattoos are visible to the legally blind It's important that not only I articulate my words loud and clearly to someone who is deaf, but to be sure the conversation is exciting so they are not also selectively deaf. I've found a balance when bathing to be both detached to the bathing and have a fondness of the bathing, meaning I am not just washing a body but a human being and to treat them with respect, and I have found it's a very pleasant experience and I feel confident in my bathing capabilities. There are only 400 jewel blue 1961 Corvettes in existence, and to see one in pristine condition up close is breathtaking. My mind is almost as good as google maps. Google maps doesn't work without internet connection and therefore... Always, always, always write down the directions! A fireman never retires. If I open my heart, so will they I have never been more excited to watch Fox News I've never been so honored to be asked to stay for dinner. My next Bottle Barn run will be on a mission with my client in mind. I understand the bumps in the road are learning experiences, but to stick it out when things get uncomfortable and push through to make a difference for that client is the most wonderful feeling in the world, so after everything I've learned today, I feel confident that caregiving will be my life long passion. |

Awesome!
LL, I don't know if you are aware of therapeutic affects of music/singing for people with dementia? It might be something that comes in useful, maybe singing along to their favourite tunes (from their younger years/youth/childhood) or playing CDs. It can be very enjoyable, uplifting and bonding. |

I have learned that, although it is a rarity, that some companies go well beyond expectations to deliver excellent customer service. A shipment seems lost in the mail. "No problem," they told me. "We'll send you another." I did not expect that.
