Have you done anything nice for someone lately?

What was it?

I mailed my six-year old cousin an envelope full of goodies - bubble gum, pencils, pencil case, etc. I think kids like to get stuff in the mail.

A really sweet lady at church ran out of food before her pay check came in a couple of weeks ago. Initially I gave her my phone # to call me if she needed anything....but realized if she was like me, I wouldn't call so I loaded up several bags of groceries from my freezer & took the food over to her home. Had a wonderful visit with her too. It's awesome really getting to know people I'm around on a more personal level.

I am painting a baby gift for a friends new baby. Baby's room is all about foxes so I designed & am painting a cute fox & her name on a huge letter "E" the first initial of the baby's name. I didn't have it completed for the baby shower but sketched it out with felt pens on a piece of paper I attached to the wooden letter I had stained. It's going to be adorable & a very personal sort of crafty gift.

Does feeding my wild mommy raccoon & her 5 babies count? Mommy raccoon was starving thin when she came to my back door....I fed her then realized she was nursing.....then a fre weeks later she brought her babies with her....who can resist feeding those adorable little critters.

I love reading your posts, esp about the farm. Brings a real breath of country air. You're awesome.

What nice thongs have I done lately. Hmm. I hold doors open ( don't always get a thank you), say please and thank you, don't rob banks, well not lately anyway. Courtesy costa nothing. Was standing talking in a shop the other day when someone in an electric hair wanted to get past and said in a vaguely threatening tone ' mind out the way'. I was initially a bit taken aback but maybe his life sucks so I turned the other cheek. But then he got out of his chair and kicked it. You can't win.

Yesterday I attended a DBSA conference in N.J.
I found out they are trying to start a support group in my location because there are
no groups close to the area. They have been trying to get someone to run the group
for the last two years so I stepped up and told them I would do it.
I am going to facilitator training in November and then I will be running a group.
I hope it turns out to help people that have no access to a support group otherwise.

I tried to do something nice, but half failed. . I found a cat outside Walmart in 95F weather who looked not only malnourished but like he was suffering from heat stroke. I did go in and get him some food and water. He was weak though and I wanted to get him out of the heat. I asked the bus driver if I could take him on the bus (maybe to drop him off at a shelter since I can't have pets here) and he said no. Then I went to the parking lot and asked some people if they could take him, they all said no and one person said I was crazy for handling a stray cat (note he probably wasn't born stray because he let me touch him). As a last resort I tried to call animal control but they had high call volume and were closing in half an hour. It broke my heart but I had no choice but to leave him there I really hope someone helped him

I like this thread. It helps us to be see whether we are doing nice things. I try to be nice to everyone I meet--telling someone I like their shirt or whatever (compliments), smiling, etc. I've stayed in most of the week, so the main thing I can think of is being nice to my husband and pets and people on the Internet.

Even though we were worn out and groggy, we still had a good conversation with our server.

I enjoy it when the cashier at the store is sort of grumpy when I start checking out but ends up smiling & friendly by the time they are done. Love to brighten someone's day just engaging them in conversation. It took me several times of it happening to realize that i even had that kind of effect on them.

I always stop if I see someone stopped along the road with car problems. Have jump started more cars for people. One time a lady was walking a cart away from town with something she had bought & it rather awkward. I stopped & loaded her stuff into my truck & drove her home. Another time I stopped & picked up a young guy walking his bike along the highway. Thought he was heading somewhere close. Turned out his end destination (home)was about 3 hours away across the state. I fed him & gave him a place to sleep, shower ,& wash his cloths & then drove him home the next day after he went with me to my church. Interesting because just being there to listen & talk to was something he needed as bad as a drive home. Who would have thought I could really help someone when all I initially thought was that I was just going to drive him home. You never know what your help might mean to someone.

The number of accidents where I have been first on the scene here have been numerous. Our dispatch people were getting to know me & so were the EMT'S that arrived at the accidents (small towns are easy to get to know them) not long ago, I had a single car accident where the guy ran off the road, over the mailbox & into the farm fence. When I called 911 I had no idea of the address until I picked up the mailbox that had landed out in the middle of the street.

A lot of my nice things here have also to do with farm animals especially cows though I have chased down several horses that got out too. My neighbors cows were forever coming over to my farm or crusing down the street. I learned real quick how to herd cows with my truck....though the best cow herding was at 1am out on a very dark highway with a very black cow that was on the street side of the fence. I herded him to keep him off the road while my call went out for help to my local sheriff. When he arrived he was able to block off the street on the farm side & then cut the chain on the gate. I herded the cow down the driveway & blocked off it's escape with my truck. The sheriff kept the gate open & other cows in while I got out of my truck & chased the wayward cow in through the gate. Not bad teamwork for never having had worked together before.

I have also been caregiver for 3 abused stallions while the court case was being handled & I do a lot of farm sitting for friends & have cared for them when sick. Amazing what we can learn to do when we find ourselves in a totally new environment. This city girl always hated the city & all I ever wanted was to live in the country where I finally feel totally at home.

I'll admit to feeling some awkwardness in answering this question because it seems it is not in keeping with the spirit of the question but...

I quit my job yesterday. It was a source of extreme stress and was the most hostile work environment I ever had the displeasure of working in. I've had three heart attacks at work in the last year and the situation along with my health, continued to decline.

Well founded or not, I have almost pathological levels of responsibility and loyalty so quitting was very, very difficult for me but it was the nicest thing I've done for myself in recent memory.

At personal cost I stood up to a group of bullies attacking a defenceless person. This has come at my own personal cost but I have no regret. it was the right thing to do.
