Several times now in recent days I have stood in the grocery line with a single item as the person ahead of me unloads a mountain of goods from their cart. No acknowledgement. No smile and certainly no polite gesture of "I see you have only the one item, please step ahead of me." This really grates on me as there is no bloody way I would behave that way. Got one item? "Hi, why don't you go first?" That was the way I was raised. Is it too much to expect such decency? Personally, I find such behaviour ignorant and rude.

Yeah, it seems rude. But I have a suggestion. Instead of standing there being annoyed, perhaps you could try asking if they mind you scooting through with your one item. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I have experienced the same, several times recently. UGH. What has happened to good manners?

I would feel awkward to ask to go ahead of someone else, especially if the person acted annoyed or said "no".

I try very hard to always be decent to others, I will hold a door for people and I
would always allow a person with one or two items to go before me in line.
There are still good people out there that do the same but common decency seems
to be harder to come by these days.

Well yea if they say no...of course. But there is still that little triumph of asking for something you want, even if you don't get it.
