I am feeling bummed. This year might be the first real year of "pathetic" xmas. I usually go to my brothers house on xmas but I don't think I can this year because weather is going to be bad. But assuming I do that trip won't be fun and could be downright dangerous. Assuming I make it home... it is very possible my power could be out as we are supposed to get ice and then rain and then freeze and then wind.

Then, if the power is out... almost immediately it is going to get very cold. And my home has gotten down to 55 after 12 hours without power in 30 degree weather never mind 18.

Assuming I make it though all that it is going to get extremely cold this week -5 or so, and that always is tough on me and then snow again next weekend, so no chance we can defer x-mas to next weekend. Ugh...

I've been without power for days on several occasions and it becomes a real drag. (I live in a rural area in a very obstreperous old dwelling.) I hope the electricity stays up for you.

And it's a shame when you're looking forward to a special event and it doesn't happen, but be safe. Maybe it'll all work out anyways.

18F (-7C) That should still be warm enough you don't need to plug your car in, so no worries it won't start. Or, is it the snow that bothers you? Definitely yes, that is a reason to stay home; but, if you want to reach your brother's prepare yourself. Make sure you are dressed warmly, take along a blanket, a tin can and candle, snow shovel, and food.

As for the event of a power outage. You don't have to worry about pipes bursting until the temperature falls to -3F (-16C). Put candles in tin cans - the cans will radiate heat and help keep the temperature from falling quickly.

In my own effort to battle my worry about such, I try to look at such potential as rather potential for an adventure to talk about later. In the meantime, drag out your blankets.

Why do you say that? Isn't it 32 degrees F?

Thanks all... but the storm is MUCH worse than they even said. At the very least I will be late... and I might not go at all. My nephew (who is of texting age now) texted me last night wanting me to come (is it wrong that I think he just wants his present?) but, it is starting to look unlikely. My power just dimmed and we don't have any wind yet.

When the snow ends... I could get out on the road but my concern is falling limbs with strong winds and ice on the trees.

Christmas morning, in bed alone.

It snows in Senegal? Amazing!

I expect a couple of phone calls, food from a few neighbors, and nothing else today.

That’s fine, that’s good. I have no Christmas traditions, no fond family memories. Envious of those who do, naturally. The idea of being a grandparent, though, makes me feel sickish.

Merry Christmas.

Hope you're doing OK today. For me there's an extra bit of dread added when feeling lonely, disappointed, or down when a storm or cold spell is on the way. We have that happening in my part of the world later this week and I find the weather predictions hitting me in the pit of my stomach. Hope some "warmth"--in any form--is finding its way to you.

I say you're trying too hard to look cool.

Not all mammals are warm-blooded

The infrastructure in your countries does suck, this is the only reason I think you should feel bummed about... be resourceful and live smart, what does the nature mean to you?

Thanks for the support everyone. Thinks did go ok. After a few issues, I didn't lose power and got out to see my family. I have GOT to stop listening to weather forecasters. They cause me so much stress.

You got to see your family, that warms my below freezing temperature heart, thanks for the good news. I'm freezing my behind off because it's scientifically snowing, I can claim it as true, I'm the logical instrument for my own survival, and logical action has to follow.

The word "arctic" comes from the Greek word ἀρκτικός (arktikos: "near the Bear, northern") and that from the word ἄρκτος (arktos: "bear").
Most of us here don't live there. I don't think you need to stop listening to those 'forecasters' entirely, it's not a bad thing to feel prepared for anything like the possible power outages.

Forty years ago, Celsius came to Canada. Its reception? Brrrrrrrrr

This is by far the most favorite temperature unit story. I knew it! I like how the story sounds historically accurate, I think I'm gonna nerd myself up next year in Meteorology, one can try to put himself on an equal ground as weathermen, no fancy graphics, just me against the media....

Feeling bummed on xmas eve

Belated Season's Greetings!
