I posted awhile ago that a friend ordered me a DNA test kit for Christmas. I got my results. Holy crow! I'm not what I thought I was! My paternal grandfather came to the US from Canada. We have a French last name. My maternal grandfather's family was German. French and German only make up a teeny part of my DNA! I'm mainly English and the rest of the UK. Heaven only knows where the Finnish comes from. As for the African, I've always had my suspicions, but never any proof. Guess I was right.

For those who are interested, here are the results

Europe 98.0%
North and West Europe 89.6%
English 75.2%
Irish, Scottish, and Welsh 11.2%
Finnish 3.2%

South Europe 8.4% this would include France and Germany
Iberian 8.4%

Africa 2.0%
West Africa 1.1%
Nigerian 1.1%
North Africa 0.9%
North African 0.9%
Thanks for this!

I did it a couple of years ago and I wanted to be surprised but sadly it didn't tell me
much that I didn't already know. I am glad you learned a few things about your
history, it's always exciting when you get the info.

I'm gobsmacked! I feel like the guy in the DNA test kit commercial that says his family always thought they were German and turns out they were Scottish. We always thought we were largely French. A distant cousin did some research and identified German ancestors. Silly me figured I was primarily French and German.

I've been kicking myself for not getting the test when it was on sale...I suspect African too. Mums side is 100% Germany, grandpa did research, but my dad was Heinz 57.

That's so cool, LizardLady! What a revelation, eh?

I did mine this year too! Not quite as surprising, although more than half my DNA is Eastern European (my dad's family is 100% Polish as far as we know, which accounts for 50% of mine, but not sure about the little bit extra).

My biggest surprise is that I'm approximately 7% Jewish! Nobody in my family has any clue where that came from - but I kind of love it. In a weird coincidence, I had taken a class on Judaism, just out of curiosity, a couple years ago.

By the way, if you're interested in exploring the health side of things, you may be able to download your raw data file and upload it to Promethease.

I did this with my data from Ancestry.com - it was fairly easy (and they only charged $5) and there's a TON there to explore. It's all still being researched, obviously, but there's a lot that's mental health related too (I have a gene alteration that predicts that I'll do much worse while under stress, which is SO true!). Weird things too - like I found out that I can metabolize caffeine faster than most people . I've always avoided coffee and caffeine for health reasons, but it's nice to know that I can indulge a little now and my body can clear it out pretty quickly!

Absolutely fascinating! About the African- isn't everyone some percentage of African? Or African or Asian?
Thanks for this!

Yeah, humans came from Africa/Asia originally, but I don't think this test is that sensitive. Pure the test 2% of my DNA is from Africa!

I emailed the folks at the company to ask how it can be that another member of the site and I have a HUGE overlap in our family trees, including people from Germany, but Germany doesn't show as an ethnic match for me. Maybe they are defining southern France and Germany as Iberian?

Like I said before, I'm gobsmacked by the results!

Yes, I would be, too! Now I'm really curious to do the test.

Interesting. Only reason I would like to do it is to find out if there is any jewish on my dad's side. They were from Germany & his grandmother spoke German. I grew up with several Jewish neighbors & went to all their celebrations. They always told my dad he definitely looked like part of the family. I have such a closeness to the jewish foundation to Christianity....would love to know if its JUST intellectual of an internal connection
