This is looping around my head lately.

"You may not be responsible for you injury but you are responsible for your recovery."

"Sorry I am late. I sat on my bed in a towel for an hour staring at the wall."

This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors.
Thanks for this!

Ugh. I HATE the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" memes. For example, "Think positive and you will be happy!" That sort. They just perpetuate mental illness stigma and cause a whole lot of people to feel guilty.

I'll look for some memes to post on this thread.

One of my favorite ones is

Mom: Are You listening?

Me: Ya.

My Mind:

And the picture is a bunch of cartoon characters dressed as potato chips and dancing.

The one that is 100% relatable to me is one that said

“When your boss is telling a ***** story but you have to act interested because you already
F ed up today.”

That meme popped up right before I quit my last job. It was exactly how I felt at work. And she did tell an awful lot of crap story’s.

There are a bazillion dog memes I really like. The only one that comes to mind right now is the one where the dog is on the couch looking back over his shoulder at you saying, "I don't always bark in the middle of the night, but when I do, it's for no reason at all.".

The very last words that my evil stepmother uttered when I grovelled and asked her for help with my depression.

“You just need to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Come back to see me when you’re not crying so much.”

Possible trigger:

I equate that ‘think positive’ crap with CBT. I’m overwhelmed by those 12-step memes — “Stop your stinkin’ thinkin’!” — ugh; makes me ill. When hospitalized we had two or three ‘anonymous’ meetings per day. As I wasn’t speaking for over one-year, I never ‘shared’ during that year or for the following years.

One meme that I loath is the pernicious use of the word ‘meme.’ It’s Richard Dawkins’ (my hero!) word yet it’s been purloined by the Internet to mean something entirely different than Dawkins’ meaning.

Ugh.
