Recently I've been trying to bake my own sourdough bread. It's quite challenging and I still haven't been able to get it 100% right but I do enjoy the process. I won't stop until it's perfect. It's no longer about the bread, now it's a test of my willpower and abilities :-D

I do. I used to be able to make it the old-fashioned way but nowadays, I use a bread machine. Omg!! I love it and when it is running, my apartment smells divine!

Are you making yours by hand?

I love baking bread. I don't do it much anymore since it's so labour intensive and takes forever for the yeast to rise. But every couple of months, I'll get the urge and make a couple of loaves. My favourite to bake is actually rolls made with oatmeal in them.

I've been baking bread for... oh... 50 years or so... give or take a couple of years? It all started out when I was somewhere around the age of 20. I was into all things Russian. (It was around the time of "Dr. Zhivago".) I happened to see a recipe in Parade magazine for Russian black bread. (I still have the recipe.) So I thought I'd give it a try. (It's probably one of the more difficult breads to make simply because there are so many ingredients. At least there were in that particular magazine recipe.) Anyway, it turned out pretty well. And I've been hooked ever since.

I had the opportunity, several years ago, to study bread baking with 2 French master bakers. And now that I'm retired, & have time on my hands, I do a lot of bread baking. If I'm not here on PC, there's a good chance I'm working on a bread. I've done sourdough in the past. I don't do it anymore. I've developed a 3 day (or longer if I choose) process using commercial yeast that works well for me.

By the way, there's a forum on the internet for home bread bakers. I'm not a member. But I've visited it a few times & it looks interesting. Here's a link:

Glad to see other bakers here! My mum used to bake her bread from a commercial mix in the machine for several years. But now I'm working on sourdough and actually produced my first decent loaf today! It was my 5 or 6th attempt. Now I'll try to make it perfect and experiment with extra ingredients.
I kneaded by machine but this one that worked well was kneaded (folded) by hand 3x.

Skeezyks, it's interesting to hear your story. I'm not Russian but I'm Slavic so as you know bread is very important in our culture. I wanted to bake bread as a form of connection with the tradition and perhaps mindfulness, too. We'll see if this is just another of my countless two week hobbies or if will remain.

My uncle gave me his bread machine and I’ve used it a few times. I also have made bread from bread mixes but have made it in the oven instead. I made Pillsbury pumpkin bread in September.

Used to make homemade rolls with my grandmother. Had a breadmaker as a wedding gift, but it was never the same. I think I have the recipe, as my granmother handed down to me the recipe album. It's one of those things that takes hours of waiting and I really only lack a sifter for the flour. Finally spotted some in abundance very recently.

I used to love to make bread, completely from scratch. It was wonderful. Now that I live alone there's no one to share the bread with, so I don't bake it anymore.

I used to bake bread from scratch. I loved it. Working the dough is a good way to work off a good mad! Seeker, I used to keep sourdough starter in the fridge. Once you create the starter it can go on forever.

Don't bake bread very much anymore. Working long hours and exhaustion from chronic fatigue get in the way. Might make something from scratch once or twice a year now. I have a recipe for traditional Irish soda bread that is to die for!

Ah, this thread is bringing back some fond memories...

It's on my 'to do' list. We don't have any great bakers in town and the local supermarket bread isn't great either. Cheap yes ( i tend to get it when it's dramatically reduced ), but taste wise not so great.

As a teenager, I used to love baking bread. Found a perfect place with the right temperature for the yeast to rise right by one of our house heaters. Once I got the hang of it I tried various different recipes. One that I could never get to work, tho, was the sourdough bread. Oh well...

There's nothing - I mean nOTHING - like the smell of freshly baking bread.

Thanks for this!

I have! The one good thing about living with my abusive ex was that our apartment had an excellent oven. I made delicious French loaves
