Dear Psych Central community,
What do you all think of the phrase, "Corruption exists wherever there is Opportunity?" Thanks, HD7970ghz __________________ "stand for those who are forgotten - sacrifice for those who forget" "roller coasters not only go up and down - they also go in circles" "the point of therapy - is to get out of therapy" "don't put all your eggs - in one basket" "promote pleasure - prevent pain" "with change - comes loss" |

It may be pessimistic but is also true. Corruption can be slight or even dismissible by some or at the top damaging and despairing.

I do not think every opportunity leaves room for corruption.

Thanks for the responses!
Someone told me this on a distress line the other day and it stood out to me. Just wanted to know what people think of it. To clarify, the line, "corruption exists wherever there is opportunity," does not mean it happens all the time wherever there is opportunity. It means it exists wherever opportunity exists; as in, it is a possibility not an absolute. Thanks, HD7970ghz __________________ "stand for those who are forgotten - sacrifice for those who forget" "roller coasters not only go up and down - they also go in circles" "the point of therapy - is to get out of therapy" "don't put all your eggs - in one basket" "promote pleasure - prevent pain" "with change - comes loss" |

I personally read the line and thing possibility, however, my way of interpreting something is clearly different from others. Thank you for allowing me to clarify! What are your thoughts about the way you wrote it, "The possibility of corruption exists wherever there is opportunity." I definitely agree that there are possibilities of corruption existing when there are opportunities. It truly depends on the moral values & character of those involved. I have high moral values & if I see corruption I will observe till I have the facts then I will definitely call it out.
Had a situation with the home care person & my mom....caught her trying to financially abuse my mom. I watched....I filed in my mind everything that was happening. Everyone told me no way was that happening. I ended up filing a case with the police. She fled. I was so good at protecting my mom the police didn't have the evidence to prosecute but they sure wanted to. She saw the possible opportunity to get all my mom's things, house & money. She ended up in a battle she couldn't win that time. From things she said that I filed in my mind.....this wasn't the first time she did that with a person who was dying. Some opportunities out there are even beyond our grasp to understand.....some are more simple & easy to see. __________________ Leo's favorite place was in the passenger seat of my truck. I agree with there being a possibility of corruption exists when there is opportunity. There's so many factors that go into things. It's hard to parse out. Kit

I think as a general statement it's true. I mean, you only have to look at the way the world is, down through history, to see it.

Yes.
That's why it's important to set limits in public life and to enforce them: economically, politically, socially, personally.... Hard to agree on the limits when many powerful people are corrupt. A lot of wealthy people who I know - erm - have double thinking about drawing the line where opportunity ends and corruption begins. They make personal exceptions to the rules that they want to enforce on others. But some people shine out with integrity. Complicated. __________________ *"Fierce <-> Reality"* oh god I am struggling today, help me to remember how to stay connected and human! remember: the nut shell against human predators and my own fear! |

I don't come here often anymore, but Eskie's picture of Leo really touched me.
Corruption is inevitable, IMO. There's some degree of corruption in most every social institution recorded in human history. I don't feel that stance is necessarily pessimistic. I look at it from a realistic place of non-attachment. |

I always thought of corruption as filling voids such as
Poor leadership (eg rule by fear) Weak governments (eg instability) Dysfunctional systems (eg inequality) |

Therefore most of the world should be corrupt? Where does the individual integrity and decision making come into it? Just wondering. |
