When I sold eyeglasses and did the contact lense teaches, I encountered some names I struggled with. One was a patient who wore one hard contact lense and his name was Randy D***. One lady was named Pocahontas Biddle. Two sisters were named Ameran (the electric company) and Laclede ( the gas company name). There was a doctor in Little Rock named Dr. Lipshitz. A dentist in St. Louis was named Dr. Cocayne.
I am sure there are more but that is all I can think of right now.

I imagine potter a pretty common sirname that said, I encountered someone called jack daniels (the alcaholic drink), but the weirdest name I've encountered was a boy called spider. honestly he probably changed his name now... who wants to be called spider? (so embarrassing!) I also knew some twins called orlando and washington. orlando, okay, maybe not so strange, but washington as a first name? oh yes, and then their was a boy I knew, honest to god, named " skateboard." |

High school early 80s.... new kid arrives in class and identifies himself as 'Rocky'. "Don't get smart with me young man," is the teacher's response. He said that really was his name. She accused him of giving her attitude. Yes, it's my name, it's on my driver's license he goes on and of course she only gets angrier. This eventually ended with him being sent to the office. The final result, she had to give him a public apology in front of the class. It sure didn't diminish her hostility towards him. What a struggle it was.... and his sister? "Bunny"

You see some interesting ones in South American soccer. A few off the top of my head - Derlis (Paraguay) Yoshimar (Peru) and Jucilei (Brazil). Brazil also has a long succession of names like Weverton, Everton, Ednilson, etc.

My husband is Czech. To the English-speaking ear, many Czech names are quite odd sounding. My husband's and his sister's names are normal-sounding, but here are a few common Czech names that are a bit odd (some without diacritical marks). Keep in mind that many Czechs go by shortened nick names. For example, many men with names ending in "slav" are called "Slavek", for short. Or something else even totally different. Also, many Czech women name their daughters after themselves. And their daughters. And their daughters. You end up with various nicknames to differentiate between them. For example, for the name Hana, you may hear "Hanka", "Handa", "Handulka", "Hanjura", etc. They also use a lot of diminutives, like "Hanicka".
Male--- Bohumil, Bohumir, Bohuslav, Rostislav, Vlastislav, Vratislav, Premysl, Vojtech, Slavomir Female---- Lenka, Sarka (pronounced like Sharka), Rostislava, Dagmar, Ladislava, Libuse, Radomira, Bohumila, Jitka, Jarka, Drahomira, Drahoslava |
