But, I won cause I drowned him/her(?) in quick drying hair spray, LOLOLOLOLOL

I can't believe it didn't get angry and dive bomb me, but it didn't.

It just got kinda disoriented and ended up on the window sill in hardening hair spray which I keep on hand precisely for that reason.

@HappyCrafter I'm sorry for your distress with wasps, but generally they don't intend being nasty unless having gorged themselves on fermenting fruit in one's garden and then they can become very belligerent. If you have an allergy to wasps, then you're quite right to kill them. 'Hardening hairspray' sounds interesting, but I would have dratted the insect with a rolled up newspaper. Or even use a coffee coaster.

Fact is, wasps actually do a lot of good. Unlike flies that spread disease, wasps only want a clean piece of food or a catterpiller to fly home to their nest to feed their wasp family and also, they will enjoy eating a nice bit of steak, haha. But hornets are really something else and I am glad and grateful we are not in their flight path as used to be.

Well, I thought I'd just swing by to see how you are. I hope you don't encounter any more of them.

Hi @HappyCrafter

I'm doing well thanks, just very tired from an unusually long shift at our medical centre this morning because 3/4 of our patients needed flu jabs because September and October are the most important months. But I had over 40 patients of my own to help, mostly teenagers and I didn't come home until gone 6pm.

Wasps can also get nasty if we, fearing being stung which is only a natural reaction, wave our hands around. These flying insects can't cope with sudden movement and only react out of self-protection. There are several species of wasps, but I'm referring to the yellow and black-bodied type, and they can be absolute Bu****s if one is out in the garden and enjoying a sweet honeybun. The aroma would attract them for a mile's radius, so my knowledgeable preteen informs me.

I'm really glad and happy to hear your health is improving, but it does take a long time. From what I have been reading in some of your blogs, you've already done marvellously!

Have a jolly good weekend, and stay safe!

A few years ago we went to Greece for a holiday and there, one sunny afternoon we saw hornets buzzing past our wide patio. These were far bigger than your average wasp. The largest we saw was close to 2 inches/5cm!

I had a plate of steak and chips and a few salad leaves, and one of those hornets landed quite gracefully onto my piece of meat. While we kept very still, I watched as it literally gnawed a piece of meat beofre tucking it beneath its legs and flying off. The hornet returned to take another little piece, about 4mm I reckon and its thirdf return, the hornet cleverly cut a circle of spinach leaf, curled it up like carpet beneath its legs and took off!

It was a WOW moment! Just beyond our patio wall was the hornets' flight path. Thankfully not inside it. It was a fascinating watch, but we never discoved their nest. Probably up in the hills of Koss, we thought.

I'm glad you got rid of it. Once I got a bee up my shirt and she/he flew out indoors. I'm so lucky I wasn't stung. I panicked but my mom killed it with her shoe.

@88Butterfly88

I am glad you weren't stung either! I would have panicked too!

Since we're talking about humongous flying things, we lived in Venezuela for several years during the 1970s. One "tara bruja" or Black Witch Moth got inside the house. They are 17 CM or a good 6 inches wing span. I remember it being much bigger than that, LOL They don't bite, but they look so much like bats that they are creepy. I never want to meet another.

WOW! That moth would have frightened the frits out of me! At the best of times I can't stand moths. "Frits"? Oh, that's my daughter's funny lingo. But that thing must have been awful to see.

Slightly off-topic, but I note you lived in Venezuela. All along our beaches are breakwaters built from extremely tough Greenheart, a hardwood that is shipped from that country.

See Wikipedia: Chlorocardium rodiei - Wikipedia

It's extremely heavy! In its unseasoned raw form has to be handled with care, for the wood is poisonous, especially if people get splinters. Expensive to build, but this splendid hardwood lasts almost a lifetime.

Footnote on wasps: We've cautioned our kids to avoid our fruit trees because wasps are having a booze up party on fallen apples. Totally. Legless. Wasps, I mean, not me.

They are awful to see; flat out scary!

That's fascinating about the wood! So much of Venezuela is all Amazon forest. People who went there had to wear long pants, boots with pant legs tucked in, scarf round the neck, with long sleeve shirts. I am sure it is beautiful to see but, not for me, LOL

Ok, wait, drunk wasps lose their legs?

Oh wow, I hate any kind of bugs getting in the house, but yeah... wasps feel scary, even if they don't mean any harm. And, I don't know a good way to get them back outside without hurting them (sorry, wasps!)

I had one get in once. I vacuumed it. And, it got out again (if I remember correctly).

I think I had to vacuum it again, then take the vacuum out in a back room that is not part of my main house, and leave it out there for awhile.

I wish they'd create a vacuum cleaner that can act like a normal vacuum, but also have some special "eliminate the bug" mode, so that they can't come back out. My new one might work out... I think the bags have a little plastic seal that opens from the suction when it's turned on, but closes when you turn off the vacuum. It might do a better job of trapping the critters, but I'm not sure.

That's a great idea!! And some way to suffocate them so they can't cause any more anxiety.

Ohhhhhhh, ok. I was trying to figure out how UK wasps lost their legs and the US wasps don't. I mean, not that I am aware of. I don't exactly follow drunk wasps around.
