I am moving 3 hours away. Much much sooner than later, but still no definite date. My therapist suggested I keep my Pdoc and possibly primary and just drive 3 hours to see him every 3 months. My mom is in agreement with that. I mean it seems a bit extreme to drive that far to see a doctor. Then again people drive hours and hours to go to the Mayo Clinic. What are your thoughts?

What are the healthcare options in your new domicile like?

I have options. I just have a very good connection with both my Pdoc and primary, and my therapist thinks it might be tough to switch at such a crucial point in my life.

3 hours is not gonna be good when you have an emergency! Or even just an appointment! I am about an hour away, and it is becoming annoying, and i only go 4 times a year. Make your new life where you are. Plus, would that put you in a different county, and therefore maybe out of network?

My girlfriend & I talk of a similar move & have concluded that keeping my pdoc & our primaries is a good idea. Some relationships shouldn't be messed with. My biggest fear would be starting over again in therapy (I've seen my therapist for years). In fact, I don't know if I'd be willing to start over. Sorry to bring that up, but is keeping your T an option?

Keeping my T is for sure not an option. But my current T found one that specializes in what I need and she said she could talk to her for me and set things up. Yeah I’ve thought about the emergency part. For me it’s like that 3 hours each way so we’d either have to stay with family or get a hotel room every time because there’s no way we’d drive 6 hours like that. I’m still going to be in the same state. So it wouldn’t be out of network. Ideally I would like to keep them both because I feel like I shouldn’t mess up these relationships but yeah 3 hours just seems too much. I’ll have to see how things are by the time we’re ready to move.

For emergencies can you just go to a local urgent care. I sure wouldn't want to drive or ride for 3 hours if I had the flu to see my primary MD. But I can see keeping them for other important issues..& definitely your Pdoc if you only see him every 3 months & you have a good rapport.

You should ask your therapist and psychiatrist to do video appointments with you. With technology you have all kinds of options; for instance there’s Google hangouts. Why not suggest video appointments with them?

Personally I wouldn't do it, unless there were no options at my new location. 3 hours is pretty far, and I'm used to long commutes, especially when the weather is bad. I see my pdoc once a month, and it takes me an hour and a half each way to get to him, and I think even that's a burden. But it's close enough that if I need an emergency appointment I can still get there ok.

How about keeping them initially and see how it works out? That way you have the stability of seeing docs you are comfortable with during the stress of moving. Once you are settled in you new place you can decide about continuing with them. If you decide to switch I would ask each of them for referrals in the new area.

Can you get a recommendation for someone else?
I am probably moving soon and as soon as I mentioned it my doctor said she had recommendations for other doctors. |
