Hello, I couldn't find another forum to ask this particular question on, so I thought maybe this section would be okay on here.

I'm just wondering what punctuation mark would be correct to use in the ending of this sentence:

"this is my favorite photo; aesthetically at least"

Is the semicolon correct, or would a dash or just regular comma be grammatically correct? Thanks ☺

You mean in the middle of the sentence, with a period at the end?

My first choice would be a comma in the middle. But i could see a semicolon if it were dialogue and the author wanted to emphasize the pause.

The semi-colon is incorrect because "aesthetically at least" is NOT a complete sentence. I have a love for dashes but to know if it would be appropriate I would need to see the paragraph. My gut instinct, however, urges me to use a comma.

The full post was:

"Sorry Hubble Ultra-Deep Field, but I think the Pillars of Creation takes the spot for my favorite astronomy photo; aesthetically at least 😛"

Well, technically there is a missing comma after "Sorry", but i think ending the thing with a tongue hanging out sorta negates any normal boomer punctuation rules

I’d comma up the whole thing. I don’t know if this is right:

Sorry, Hubble Ultra-Deep Field, but I think the Pillars of Creation takes the spot for my favorite astronomy photo, aesthetically, at least.

Again, my gut instinct says comma, but depending on how much emphasis you want to use at the end, a dash is fine as well. There also needs to be a comma after "sorry".

Sorry, Hubble Ultra-Deep Field, but I think the Pillars of Creation takes the spot for my favorite astronomy photo, aesthetically at least.

Sorry, Hubble Ultra-Deep Field, but I think the Pillars of Creation takes the spot for my favorite astronomy photo--aesthetically at least.

I'd say the dash might be the most stylistic choice (that is my personal opinion). You would have to add a comma between aesthetically and at least because at least is a modifier. Hope this helps.

"This is my favorite photo -- aesthetically, at least."

The comma or the dash would be okay, if you want to emphasize the end. I think the semicolon is a bit over the top, and as someone said, the second part is not a sentence.

(I have taught English courses, and have a Bachelor's in English.)

Glad you asked! We have all sorts of experts here at PC. hug:
