It could be a Gray Heron, not sure if they have those in the USA, but they are over here in Europe.

Definitely grey heron! They like fish and where I live are notorious for stealing goldfish from ornamental ponds lol.

Looks to me like a Great Blue Heron (huge bird!) but I live in CA so could be the grey version where you are.

Definitely a heron. They love swampy areas. I saw some in France this week, and know they are present in the US on the east coast. I'm assuming it is a gray heron, but not 100% sure. White herons are also common in similar places. I wouldn't get too close to them. My father got bitten by a Great Blue heron some years back. They aren't usually aggressive, though.

Depending on how tall it is a Great or Lesser Blue Heron.

Blue Heron. I have several around my farm because it has a creek that runs behind it & when I drive up to the barn on a neighbors farm to feed my horse early in the morning I always disturbed it having breakfast in the pond. They are beautiful elegant birds & always thrilling to watch. I live close to the Ky River & they have a bunch that nest together down there

It's a Great Blue heron. Similar herons are Little Blue herons and Tricolored (Louisiana) herons.......the former is much smaller and much more blue/gray with some red in the neck and is more "stubby" when wading. The latter often has a spotted white stripe that runs down its neck. Neat note - a Great Blue heron "croaks" when it flies - lots of fun to hear.

Heron. There is one here just a bit bigger than that guy. He is sometimes accompanied by a stark white crane of equal size. If you are lucky, you might catch him sunbathing or fishing.

Hi Photonate, did you get a second look? I was wondering what you think the bird is now. It's nice you have a local wetlands to explore
![]() My guess, like others would have been blue heron as well... assuming you're in Michigan. |
