Someone tried filing retirement benefits under my moms name and she called and whoever she called put a stop to it. But now she’s at the police station filing a report and I’m freaked the hell out that someone is after me. Why did this happen specifically to my mom and how did they get her info?

Am I just worrying for nothing?

This is a scam and identity theft. Filing unemployment or retirement using other people’s names. It’s nothing to do specifically with you. It’s what scammers do.
Thanks for this!

Thanks. I was hoping you guys would respond. You are very knowledgeable.

My mom said the guy who worked at the police station said my mom was the second one today to have this happen to. He said he doesn’t know what’s going on but he said no one is after me. Ha I asked her to ask him that because I get so paranoid when this type of stuff happens.

I seek reassurance way too much.

My mom just has to make a couple calls.

Nothing wrong with asking for reassurance. These scams are sadly common and very scary. And they look for older folks in hopes older people are not as savvy to catch on the scam right away. Glad your mom is on it and taking care of business

Scammers are getting VERY sophisticated. I recently got an email about my American Express card bill threatening to take me to court. Thing is I don't have an Am Ex card.

It's not about you specifically. My son is going through all sorts of entanglements because somebody has filed for unemployment benefits using his name. It's ridiculous, how much money scammers cost the government.

Scammers are changing the game of what we knew and who we trust. But some people are fighting back.

I even saw an internet pro wipe the files of the people who were trying to scam him. He was very computer literate.
Thanks for this!

It's totally okay to seek reassurance about this kind of thing. It's scary when it happens to you.
