I was always partial to Doctor Seuss books. In fact, I think I initially learned to read from one. The rhymes and verbal rhythm, humor, adventure, and excitement were most appealing. I liked most of his books, but definitely The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, is about the best.

My favourite book from childhood (from about 8 or nine years old), was The Good Master, by Kate Seredy. I loved it because it was bout a girl growing up on a farm, and was full of heartwarming vignettes about day-to-day life. It was set in Hungary, but it could have been any girl, any farm, anywhere. And the illustrations were fantastic.
