how to block an address using Gmail?

does anyone know how to do this

do I need a message sent by the person to begin with, or is their a way I can add it to like an unsafe list.

Try going to settings (gear icon at the top) and then to the heading Filters and Blocked Addresses. It looks like you can add a new filter to block a certain email address. Then all emails from that address will go directly to Spam.

I *think* that in gmail, you can only send unwanted email to the deleted folder and not completely block. Much like hotmail. Don't quote me. Google I'm sure has answer to your q too.
