do you know anyone who never uses the internet, and if so, do you know why they don't use it?

I don't know anyone anymore. my grandmother/ grandfather never used it, think the reason was they were just stuck in their ways and they felt comfortable with it and that's fair enough

In the areas in the world where there is no internet. Remote villages in isolated areas

Other than that no. Age isn’t an issue anymore. My son’s in law grandpa is in his 90s and he is online all the time.

I volunteered with a bunch of old ladies who either didn’t use it or who didn’t know how to use it very well. One of them told me she started learning after 9/11. Kinda strange that she didn’t know how to use it before since she was a teacher and they were using the Internet in schools in the 90’s. but in 2016 she still wasn’t very good at it.

I remember the first time we got internet at my house. Summer of 98. I had just woken up from a nap after puking all over the floor and the Internet was hooked up.

I'm not sure I remember exactly when we got it, but I do remember the dial-up

annoying, slow, and hopeless if someone needed to use the phone

We had dial-up, at first, too. It was affordable but, WOW!, it was also SLOW.

My Dad, who was 64 when the Internet became available, was on of the first people I knew who jumped on and explored as much as he could. He got an e-mail address right away, too, and used to send me regular messages once I got a computer ( I was alone and supporting myself, so it took me a few years to get on the bandwagon.). I saw Dad's excitement as a reflection of his highly intelligent and scientific nature. He LOVED the capabilities of the computer, and LOVED the Internet, and used it right up into his eighties.

My husband, by stark contrast, has almost zero interest in it. He feels he is being forced into doing something he resists very strongly. And that's also interesting to me, because he is also highly intelligent and scientific in his thinking. He just has no use for tech, even if it is almost 30 years old, now. He doesn't even like using his cell phone---he only agrees to do it because his boss insists he has one.

Me? I've found a mountain of riches in the form of info, and enjoy the better aspects of it all tremendously.

It has helped me so much on my healing path, as well. Finding a site like this has made an enormous difference!

Mum. She got a computer when it was dial up and then got an iPad but when the iPad became too old to work anymore she gave it up. She’s 93 and always busy. She doesn’t miss it at all. But she’ll ask me to look things up for her. I think her one brother doesn’t use it any more either tho he used to. Her other brother is always on the computer. On dads side I don’t think his sisters use it though they both have cell phones.

Where I live you have to have special equipment or satellite. No other way to get internet. They do have cell towers around so 4g works but seriously dropped calls happen all the time so internet can be a bit unreliable. Even my internet provider can't provide their latest equipment to my farm because they can't get a signal for it here & buffering is slow & even emails don't always get received or transmitted. But I still plug along with it & of course weather really messes it up

I also remember after getting internet going to Best Buy and all 3 of us being able to buy a computer game to play. I got this weird cartoon one with a cow and cat or something and it came with a stuffed toy and my sister got an Oregon Trail game and it came with a few things and she said to my dad “he just wants that because it comes with the toy.” And my dad said to my sister “well you just want that because it comes with that stuff.” And my sister laughed. My brother got a Casper game that my brother, my mom, and myself all played for many years until it stopped working after the new internet or whatever it was wouldn’t support those games anymore. It kinda sucks that so many computer games are lost now because they don’t work anymore.

Yes, several! I have two elderly neighbors who do not use the internet at all. One did use it for a while but gave it up when her computer died. I think my neighbors just don't care about anything that's online. My grandmother will not touch it. She has some paranoid thoughts about it and doesn't want to be on video for anyone. I also know someone who had legal issues around internet use and he is mostly offline now.

My mother, now 86!

First it was perceived cost and difficulty. In her own words "too late now".

My mother never did. She always said "I don't believe in the internet."

I wish that person was me. I use it too much, I’d at least like to cut back.

But I do know someone who doesn’t have internet and hasn’t ever had it so they don’t use it unless they go to the library to look something up.

I use it too much, too. I know my grandad and dad didn’t use it (in my dad’s case, I hesitate to say “never”, since he briefly had an office job in the early 2000s), but they’ve both passed now so I’m not sure they count?

This site and others like it have really helped me along my healing path. I've also met some of the strongest and most beautiful people, virtually, because of that.

I'm not here as often as I'd like, but life has changed for me. And it still helps to know it is here when I need it most.
