What have you found that’s been good?

I used to go to thrift stores and I think the best thing I found was a brand new pair of Vans with the tags still on them for $14. I also got a swim suit with the $114 price tag on them for $7. I saw a $400 Ralph Lauren dress with the tags still on them for $40. Lol why wouldn’t they return it instead of donating it.

But I don’t go to them anymore because I just would always get so crabby to the point of anger at how crowded and messy they always were and how kids were always running all over the place. I had a kid grab onto my leg one time and I had to shake her off and run. They also never had my size in anything.

Now I just do online shopping and it saves me the headache and I can always find my size. I’d get so annoyed when I would find something great only to have it be the wrong size. I did though get to Walmart before the back to school kids got there when they had just stocked their fall stuff and I found a couple flannel hoodies.

I do like Platos Closet though which has trendier brand name better condition clothes. The clothes at the Platos closet by me is really inexpensive. They have J crew sweaters for $8 and other good name brands. I saw a Supreme hat which are incredibly expensive and hard to find. They are out of stock all the time on their site and you can’t even find them on eBay really and they were selling it for $55.

I find it too hard to sort through all the crap to find something good at thrift stores. I have very little patience for shopping in general and usually do it all online.

The other day I almost bought a shirt, but there was one cashier and the line must have been at least 30 people. It didn't seem worth it, so I put the shirt back and left.

Nope don't do charity/thrift shops I don't mind donating I just can't deal with knowing other people have used the item I'm looking at. Same with Libraries I never go to I can't cope with people using things before me.

I wish I could, I just can't

I don’t really understand Supreme because I just ordered a hat from there and they used to say that stuff would sell out really fast when they dropped the stuff at 11AM on Thursdays but I had no issue. I mean I never tried before I just looked one time and saw everything was sold out. But yeah, today some stuff was sold out but I legit needed and just wanted a beanie hat and I got one. So idk. The price was decent. Shipping got to me a bit. Overall it wasn’t as much as I expected.

I love looking round charity shops (I think they’re similar to thrift shops?). Most of the stuff I buy is frivolous or unusual, rather than clothing but I found a really nice Christmas jumper last year for £3.00. Probably would have been about £10 new, but I just loved the design and how it felt on me. My brother found a pair of expensive jeans for not much money one time, too. It’s harder for him to find decent jeans because he’s on the taller side.

I used to love going through thrift stores. I used to get good prices on shirts to wear working around the farm. I don't have the time or inclination for it anymore. Have also gotten paranoid about bedbugs after finding out people will donate infested stuff.

I love to go through the thrift stores. Our shops here in town are clean and bright, and I've found all kinds of beautiful and useful things over the years.

For Liz: Bedbugs can be beaten in several ways. They are not invincible. I was a bit worried about them at first, too, but did a lot of reading and got helpful tips on how to prevent problems with items brought home from secondhand shops.

I have followed these suggestions and have never had a problem, not once.

Yes I do go to thrift stores! Sometimes a really score. Other times I don't find anything, but its fun to look around. We have a lot of thrift stores here - certain ones I prefer over others. I usually buy clothes and/or books.

I've found beautiful new items, very practical household, clothing, bedding, and collectible items, too, WG.

Husband and I both collect books, and I am drawn to antique glass and china. I am also into ethnic textiles and vintage linens.

I haven't been out too much in the last 18 months, and I MISS IT SO MUCH. It was good therapy for me, and gentle exercise. I can't wait until things get a little bit back to the real normal, again.

We love flea markets, too ( but I guess that would be for another thread!).

About the only shopping I've done in person for the last 18 months has been groceries and meds. I'm not comfortable being around people to just browse stores.

Would the bookstore at my library count as a thrift store? It was closed for over a year. It just reopened over the summer. I literally did a happy dance right there in the library!

They sell donated books, CDs and DVDs. I've made all kinds of wonderful finds like an entire season of a TV show I like for a dollar.

I have, but more often consignment shops, which I suppose are not quite the same thing. I've also offered plenty of old barely worn clothes for consignment. There are certainly some nice finds at such stores, sometimes. Often even more unique ones than when purchased brand new from other shops.

I’m selling some Rae Dunn at a consignment shop tomorrow. It’s not really a thing anymore. Except the Halloween stuff. I have 2 Halloween mugs but I want to keep them. I also have a pumpkin spice tumbler sort of thing I want. I just don’t have the room for this stuff anymore and if I can sell some of it then great. I kept my bowls that say cereal, ice cream, ramen, and noodles on them. And my 3 bowls with handles. One says chili. I don’t ever eat chili out of it though. I just like that it has a handle. I’m also keeping a couple of my red Christmas mugs but I’m selling a lot of them. But I have sugar, cookies, tea, and coffee, canisters I’m taking over Tomorrow. And a thing for cream that says cream on it.

I hope I get something for them. It’s better then just donating it.

I love thrift stores. I haven`t been to them in a while though. I once got a huge stack of vinyl records for three dollars. I usually look for records and cassettes and the like. I`ve also bought a few shirts and toys. I`m afraid of bedbugs too so if I buy clothes I always wash them before I wear them. I think it`s fun to look around thrift stores.

Over the weekend I found a pair of batman PJ pants (currently wearing) in my size for $2 along with a book I've been wanting to read for a while (Fahrenheit 451) for $3
Yeah, thrift stores are awesome. I might apply to work at one so I know when all the cool stuff comes in.

I found a vintage like Uncle Sam army metal sign today for $8 at the consignment shop. It’s pretty cool and I already have it hung up on my wall. They took all my Rae Dunn. I don’t know what they will sell it for and then what I’ll get. They didn’t have any currently on the floor so I’m hoping that is a good sign that it sells quickly.

Yeah, thrift stores are awesome. I might apply to work at one so I know when all the cool stuff comes in.
I volunteered at a thrift store for almost 4 years. It’s where I learned all the skills I needed to work in the backroom of retail stores. The other volunteers on my main day were great. I was doing once a day. Then I started a second day. I got close to one of the volunteers on that day but I can’t remember her name. I tried doing a 3rd day but the team on that day was very cliquish. So I stopped that day. I was working at a grocery store too at one point during those 3.5 years and often I’d have to run from my regular job to my volunteer job.

Man I miss being that stable with my mental health.

Besides shoes (I only wear Merrell's), I've bought just about anything in local thrift stores. They are all clean and neatly maintained, some even arrange the clothes by gender, type and size.
I have found treasures galore. Among them, a woman's Calvin Klein grey suit for $15, on half price day. I found two native American blankets that I use as wall hangings, a beautiful hand painted pitcher, a 24 lead crystal bell with a sterling silver handle. The list goes on.

Frankly if I was working, I would buy new, good quality clothes, but I'm on disability and though my husband can certainly afford it, it just seems silly to spend $40 on a shirt few people will see.

Besides, I love the hunt for that one perfect item and it's dirt cheap. It doesn't get any better than that.

I never heard of the bedbug thing being where I live, but any clothing or textiles I buy go straight into the washer when I get them home. I certainly don't wear them until after they are washed.

I found a Cheers shirt and a sweatshirt one time. The shirt said “where everyone knows your name.” And it had a picture of the bar. The sweatshirt just had the cheers logo and it said established something or another. I wonder if I still have that sweater. The shirt I don’t. Maybe I got rid of the sweater because I felt it was too old for me.

I saw a Threes Company shirt but it wasn’t the right size. Probably would have been now though. I saw it once on EBay. I wish I had bought it.

I also found a vintage MASH shirt I wore for awhile.

Edit: Nope. Don’t have the sweatshirt. I just looked.

I have a $30 off $60 coupon from Platos Closet. I could get a lot of stuff with that and unlike Kohl’s where you can’t use their coupons on anything, you can use the platos closet coupon on everything.

In 2014, I found a beautiful leather jacket with pretty fake jewels on it for $2.50. I really like to look around and see what they have.
