My boss just told me he gave his 30 day notice today. He is absolutely the best boss I've ever had.
I am struggling to not totally freak out. Senior management at our agency is driving off all the good people. Gawd only knows what they will higher to fill his position. If they put his counterpart from our other team over my team, there will be a mass exodus out the door. His management style is warm, human and supportive. Her style is to terrorize people. My gameplan all along has been to retire by next June. I wanted to sell my mom's house first for financial reasons. If things get too bad I may just quit without selling the house. Change is tough for everyone. Prepandemic I thought I was pretty good at going with the flow. With everything that's happened in the last year and a half I'm overwhelmed. Not so adaptable now. Not knowing what's going to happen has me freaking out. I could use some support and good thoughts. |

Oh Liz I’m so sorry. I know your higher management sucks I hope they do the right thing and hire from the outside and get someone you can work with for 7-8 more months. Oh what a blow. Your boss must be tired of their shenanigans too.

I hope things turn out for the better, but still sorry your boss is leaving. It’s always a blow when good colleagues and bosses leave.

Thanks everyone. I'm still in shock. Trying to tell myself to stay cool about this. I've weathered bad times with this agency in the past. I know I can survive this. Still....
My emotions are all over the place. *sigh* |

There is some good out of this. His leaving got me off my butt to contact realtors to list Mom's house. I have appointments with two of them. Also got me inspired to download application for Social Security and Medicare. Making plans helps give me a sense of control when it feels like things are spinning out of control.

I was sad to read this. My heart goes out to you.
It's the old double whammy, your circumstance. A beloved boss leaving, and a dragon lady set to take his place. And we're all still dealing with a Covid situation of some degree or another. EEK! I have nothing but the highest respect for anyone battling the things we battle, and still going forth into the world (especially since the pandemic hit) and working any kind of job away from home. Your brain MUST be higher- and- faster-functioning than mine. I cannot even imagine doing this, yet. (I worked my whole life, sometimes two jobs, my whole life; but not since the depression took me down so hard.) My hat is permanently off to you! You have always struck me as intelligent and resourceful, too. And you are kind, and have lots of friends. Surely, you won't let one person decide your fate for you? Or rent space in your head they're not paying for? I hope everything turns out to be less trouble than it looks like it might be, now. And that the house sale goes through as you hope it will. |

Oh no it’s too stressful. We have people retiring like there is no tomorrow because of the work load, too many changes and some horrible bosses. In a way it might be comforting that at least you have retirement plans. You might be able to time and plan it all now. Is there any chance they won’t promote that dragon lady but will hire someone else?

The 21st is his last day and they still haven't posted his position. That's lead to all kinds of speculation about what they are going to do. I alternate between freaking out and saying there's nothing I can do about it so let it go.
Added to this my best friend is in the hospital. We've known each other since 9th grade. The care she is getting is crappy. Her family isn't clear on what's wrong because they only get bits and pieces of info from staff. I don't think we are talking end of life, but she is very sick. I want to "do" something to fix the problem, but live 150 miles away. This isn't something I can fix anyhow. MuseumGhost, you mentioned I have lots of friends. Actually I don't. I have three people I consider friends in the outside world. She's one of them. Hmm, as I type this I realize I have some good friends here at MSF. I need to reach out. I've been following an old pattern of withdrawing into myself. |

Awww sounds like they know this is a bad move and they were dragging their feet. I’m wondering if there will be a mass exodus?

She may find herself with no one to supervise. If she takes her dragon lady stance with people on my team they might all quit en mass. Hmm, maybe we should all turn in our notice at once!

Heh heh that would give them pause. Maybe they’d even rethink their choices? 🙋*♀️

I think it may be normal to go with the flow & keep going until something BIG hits to change the peaceful flow. Think you made a great decision to get everything lined up on how to handle your options for however it turned out. Seriously, I am loving retirement. Amazing how mental health issues settle down when life becomes calm...good hard work around the farm will keep you going & more healthy

My ducks are starting to line up. I worked my finances this week. I thought I needed to sell my mom's house before I could retire. I don't have to. It'll take some juggling, but I can swing retirement without selling first.
I decided to give notice either Dec 1st or Jan 1st. I have to give 30 days notice in order to get my PTO pay out. They also give nice gift cards at the holidays. PTO pay out equals a month's pay. I would like to collect that. On the other hand, having crunched numbers this week, if the Dragon Lady gets to be too much I can afford to say "eff you" and walk out the door. |
