It's Mental Illness Awareness Week, on social media, if you follow that kind of thing.
I've been creating posts all week to educate people about how to self-advocate to providers as a person with mental illness. In chat today, I got thinking though, and I posed a question, that I'd like to pose here. I think this might be cathartic. What is one thing you'd like the world to know about having a mental illness? If you'd like to share your one thing, I would like to hear it. For me, I‘d like the world to know that my mental illness manifests physically, which means I experience real pain and fatigue, it‘s not just in my head. __________________ What if I fall? I would want the world to know that mental illness doesn't discriminate, and anyone in the world can have one.

Not everyone who shoots up places does it because they are mentally ill. The mental health community often get a bad rap after stuff like that happens.

I'd like people to know that it's cyclical (at least for me). At some times I am able to work and take care of myself just fine. At other times I am not. I always do my best, but my best varies from day to day.

What's true for me and that I'd like people to know is that, I KNOW that my thinking is illogical. Pointing it out doesn't help and doesn't change the thinking. After 20+ years of this it's hard wired. Changing that isn't like switching a light on or off. It can change, yes, but will take a while. It all sounds easy when you're not dealing with it every day.

Mental Illness is not contagious, therefore, stop ostracizing us.

I missed it, as I had to delete all of my social media accounts for my own sanity. But, I do agree with what everyone said above.
I also want to add that not everyone is "neurotypical." I'm very much "neurodivergent," and I sometimes go by "we," "they," "them," "their," etc., because of my dissociative disorder. It's okay to be different and embrace our differences. And anyone at any given time can experience mental, emotional, or psychosocial challenges - with or without a mental illness diagnosis. There are acute challenges that can affect people's mood and behaviors without meeting the diagnostic criteria for any disorder. Yet mental illness can be born from ignoring those symptoms and not getting help, or being too afraid to get help for reasons related to stigma, social standing, job loss, etc. Those issues are important to address, especially when spreading awareness about mental illness. I wish the world were more inclusive and kind, supportive and growth-based. |
