Hey all,
My 29th birthday is coming up on December 21st, and this year it'll be a stay at home birthday with just me and my Mom and Dad. I am stuck on fun birthday activities. I do facials, nails, and bubble baths on a regular basis, so I'll probably do these things anyway, but I'm looking for new ideas for activities to do. I'm stumped on things to do on my birthday, especially for ideas of things to do while celebrating at home. I am looking for a fun board game or card game to play. My mom bought me a Tarot game set and I have Uno. Essentially, I'm looking for a fun three person game that isn't a guessing game or a fun two person game if its just me and my mom who wants to play. I thought for food we could do spaghetti for dinner and bake cookies and brownies for fun and to make the house smell good, maybe some eggnog, and i like to have carrot cake. Any ideas for alcholic drinks? Usually for me and Mom's birthdays we try something new...last year we made Harry Potter style butterbeer but it was too much sugar. Here's my list of movies I might want to see on my birthday. My parents and I always watch a double feature as our main family time after dinner, and I tried to pick two movies that'd compliment each other. A lot of the time we'll watch movies throughout the day while being busy doing something else, but sometimes we have movie marathons where the whole day we pay attention to what we're watching, so perhaps for my birthday I need to pick a couple "matinee" movies to watch plus the double feature. I'd appreciate your input on choices below and movies that might go with my selection. Top Movies I'd Like to Watch Chicago, Burlesque Spencer (Princess Diana with Kristen Stewart), The Runaways Cruella, Maleficient Home Alone 1&2 Blues Brothers/Blues Brothers 2000 Gaurdians of the Galaxy 1 & 2 I know it's early but I do appreciate any suggestions! Thank you! |

Happy Pre-Birthday @LiteraryLark!
You are so young, but 29 is the last year in your 20s, so it is a good year to celebrate! My rec rehab therapist has a few of us veterans (two or three, sometimes upwards of four) meet online to play things like Yahtzee and Scattergories. Both games really helped us connect with one another and bring about some laughs. It's more fun in person, but it was still fun online. I never knew how to play those games until they were presented online, and I never played them in person. But we had a good time! Those two games might be worth exploring. The movies you listed sound awesome! If you're going to watch any Chicago-based movies, you might consider some of their local drink recipes. I spent a lot of time in Chicago (over 13 years), and I found a few alcoholic recipes that you might consider for your birthday, depending on your taste buds and needs. I used to attend this bar named Fat Cat in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago a while back. Here's a list of their drink menu. My favorite for my birthday celebration a while back was the Hi-Hat: "A Fat Cat mainstay: muddled fresh basil and grapes, Prairie Organic vodka, ginger ale." It was sweet and barely tasted like alcohol at all. There are other cool choices on that menu as well. Sangria is another choice for sweet drinks around the winter months. If you want more kick, however, there's always the White Russian, Black Russian, mixing Kahlúa with Baileys Irish Cream, or a Long Island Iced Tea. Hottie Totties are also another cool wintery drink. You'd have to Google these drinks for recipes. In the past, I used to drink with friends long distance via phone parties and being part of an online support forum somewhere. We didn't have Zoom or video conferencing back then, so we improvised with just doing the three-way or more calling feature with speaker phone while typing online and posting on the forums. We'd all make our favorite drinks and feel as though we were drinking together. We all lived in different states, and we knew each other well enough to share our true identities and phone numbers. Essentially, we did the "social distancing" thing before it was even a term some 12 years or so later. Those were good memories, despite our group breaking up a few years later (not because of the booze, BTW, LOL; it was just stupid arguments over admin stuff, which is why I'll never serve as another online admin again - long story). For a memorable birthday, you could also add in a "so, it's your last year in your 20s" theme to your party by coming up with a questionnaire for the older and younger folk at your party. You could ask about their memories if they are older, or what the younger persons dream of or think about when they reach your age. You can then compare notes with one another. Perhaps have them write down something anonymously, and then read it all out at the end. It would make for an interesting conversation piece - especially after a few drinks. Perhaps you could also mix in what was popular in terms of movies and songs for the older folk who were once 29. Those are just some ideas I can come up with at this moment. You have great ideas to begin with though. |

My Twin and I ordered cocktails and platters for our lockdown birthdays they were very pretty cool you'll find loads of places do stuff like this. Or what about an afternoon tea (might be a UK thing- I don't know!)
There is a cool game called outsmarted you down load the app after you get the board game it's like general knowledge etc check it out. If your not a drinker what about mocktails? Or make your own picnic? Done that before made rings and shop bought too. Sent from my SM-G980F using Tapatalk |

Hi SprinkL3! These are all terrific suggestions! I am just about to look into the Fat Cat menu. That's really neat about your group of Vet friends. There is one new girl I am friends with where I live (I have difficulty with friendships) that I may ask to go out with me for my birthday...The actual birthday I requested off just for the sake of sleeping in and staying in...but on one of my days off I'll be going to the casino with my mom, and I may also be starting a big thigh tattoo...the tattoo is no rush and requires a lot of planning...but anywho I thought I could ask my new friend if she wants to either come over or go out and do something with me.

Oh and SprinkL3, every five years since I've turned 20 I've written letters to my future self. Luckily, the fires did not take these letters...twice now I've saved these letters. Perhaps God has big plans for these letters, who knows.
But I like the idea of writing a letter of being 29 and all my hopes and dreams and fears about turning 30 next year...because there is a lot of mixed feelings--and excitement--about turning 30. |

I've been dreaming about turning 30 since I was a little kid. It's all I wanted to be...30...like everything would come together and make sense and life would be so much better if I was 30. But I'm curious as to what you did. |

We had loads of spa days, hotel stays, we had a meal in a fancy restaurant booked every month, we had a bbq for when we were 30.5 since our Birthday falls in February and it's winter here. We did things that we wanted to do fun things. We went to a few shows at the theatre. Most of this I paid on my credit card but others were cheap ish. We had day trips to Scotland's 2 biggest cities we just had fun and made memories lucky this was way before covid so we had opportunities to play with.... but the key factor is to HAVE FUN!!!

There's an app called Heads Up you can download to your phone that is fun to play. You hold the phone on your forehead and the other people try to get you to guess what word is on it.

There's actually an identical game played in the movie Inglouious Basterds...they get an index card and write a famous person on it and they have to guess.

Mulled wine is a good tipple this time of year. Be careful though, it can be dangerous if you make your own and include some brandy/cognac. If you don't drink then a non-alcoholic punch. Should be some recipes online. Platters are a good idea. If you like food that you wouldn't normally eat everyday, then splash out. Know it's not everyone's choice but I like prawns, smoked salmon, olive bread, antipasti type meats. Then buy an indulgent dessert instead of/in addition to cake (or cupcakes if you don't want it still around a week later lol!) Not sure on games. Trivial Pursuit keeps brain going! Those logo games are also popular. Amazing how they jog the memory.... Have a good day |

Do you have fondue pot?
My husband just bought electric one and we did cheese fondue. Cheese mixture was a bit too liquid but it was fun otherwise. Ton of recipes online. Rip a baguette (so?) or any other bread (stale or dried up) into pieces and apples and enjoy. You can also do broth and cook some meats or veggies that way. Nice activity for 2-4 people.
