I've been looking for a room to rent since I can't afford my current place any more and it'd been really stressing me out.

But I found a place to rent.

It's a large room in a beautiful heritage house, owned by an elderly Jamaican lady who lives there with her nephew, her grandson, and one other tenant. I only have to share the bathroom and kitchen with one other person, and there's lots of shelf space in the kitchen. The setup is a little less than ideal. Room on 3rd floor, kitchen in basement, but it's ok. She has 2 beautiful sitting rooms where she says I can have guests.

The room is big enough for my harp and the furniture I do want to bring, which is essentially a book shelf and a chest. The rent is unbelievably cheap. It's 650/month all inclusive, which is way less than I'm paying now, so this will definitely relieve financial pressure.

It's also sort of downtown. Not right downtown, it's on the edge of what's considered downtown and in the west end. But the transit is great. I'm a 2 minute walk to a streetcar that runs frequently.. There's a grocery store within walking distance, and lots of little shops and cafes compared to nothing where I'm currently at, so that's a big plus. It's also much closer to my psych hospital which will be really important once we resume in person meetings.

I'm very excited.

That is really low rent even for Texas, and I know Ontario is much more expensive. The situation sounds idea. Really happy for you.

Thanks Everyone

But bad news. The lady I would be renting from called me this morning to say she'd decided not to rent the room out after all as she needed it for the live in caregiver her family wanted her to get.

So back to the drawing board.

Needless to say I'm stressed.

Oh bummer. I may be looking for a place myself in a few months. I have already started reading listings. I dont know what to think. My best bet may be art deco buildings that are historical watchamacallits right downtown.

When things like this happen, sometimes, just sometimes, it turns out for the best. For instance, if that would have been your landlady for any length of time, and she turned out to be that changeable and rather cavalier about your needs and wants, farther down the line, you might have found yourself in a completely untenable, or worse, situation than you are now. Also, that rent was a bit too good to be true. And, so, perhaps there is a better situation awaiting you.

Even rents down here where we live have reached Toronto-level prices. It's so hard to believe---because we're basically in Podunkville.

My heart really goes out to you. Keeping fingers crossed for you!! Don't lose heart.

I just read this thread and it broke my heart to hear that you are struggling to find a place to live while this pandemic still continues.

I hope and pray you find a better living situation soon - one that is safe, cozy, and healthy.

On the bright side....if you had rented that room, you might have become her caregiver if family hadn't picked someone else. Ugh, after care giving just to elderly & sick fur babies these last 3 years, I am totally exhausted

Yeah, that price sounded too good to be true. I bet you would have had to do stuff around the house.

Thanks everyone.

Well the short story is I have a place, but it's temporary. I'm moving in with a family friend of some of my cousins, who lives just north of Toronto, but is on a good transit line. He's willing to let me move in for a couple of months while I continue to look for something in Toronto.

Now onto the hell that is the move. I went out and picked up boxes and other packing supplies yesterday, and the sorting and packing starts in earnest today. I basically have a week to get it done. The tough part is going to be getting rid of as much as possible.

Downsizing is tough even when done on a leisurely basis. Glad you have a place even if temporary

Glad you found this stop gap and can have an expanded time to search for a good place and you don’t have to just accept the first thing that comes along. Snow is always a headache in winter but maybe it will open up better opportunities? Take care.

Sweetie, if I had my own car, I'd be there in a heartbeat to help you. I have had to move so many times in my life, I've now vowed "never again". I really understand.

But the upside is, you'll be with someone who is caring--- and they are family---that is usually a very good thing. And it sounds like you have time to think about it all, and catch your breath. ALWAYS a very excellent thing, before a move.

It all sounds like it's going to be alright.

Thanks for asking. @SprinkL3 It's going ok. My landlord is a bit overbearing and likes telling me what I'm doing wrong, and the commute down to my job is a bear, but it's not bad as temporary accommodations. I've started my trauma program, and so want to be here until that is done at the beginning of March, and then I'll reevaluate.
