Hey, dumb question...I am hopefully moving into an apartment soon and the most important piece for my apartment is my bed...but I have never bought a bed before.

I know I am a side sleeper and like my mattress on the firm side but not rock hard. I also know I need help with choosing the right height for the bed to be off the ground...my last real bed was too high and the guest bed I sleep in now is too low and this guest bed has legs in the middle of the bed which makes placing storage containers underneath it very hard.

Then there's the size. Mom and Mamma says all I need is a double...but besties say if I want a boyfriend I need at least a Queen...Personally I find Kings to be so luxurious, but then there's space inside my apartment.

So here's what I need to know... What's the proper way to pick out a bed? I hope with COVID I can still lay on the bed at the mattress store. How do I know by laying on it if it's the right fit? I do know about 30 day trials. I also know I'll pay top dollar for a bed and bed frame as to be honest I practically live in my bed. Whether for sleep or for reading or for playing on my laptop, I prefer being in bed rather than on a couch
..thats why I want the best of the best and I do NOT want a bed that's going to be slipping and sliding around my room...the guest bed does that. I am also a thrasher at night so I need a bed that wont move.

Also, what is the average cost of a bed?

Any tips or help are appreciated.

I researched the hell out of the many “bed in boxes “ like purple, Casper, etc. we settled on Bear mattress. Middle of the road pricing and a 20 year guarantee along with 100 night trial. We love it. We got our frame from ikea. It came with 2 free pillows
And the softest set of sheets but it beats those mattress stores where the sales people work on commission and follow you around asking if you need help. I know of some people who go to a mattress store
And try these out and the order them. Ours was 1500$ with the 100 night guarantee. Amazon has some that are cheaper but I don’t know how they stack up.

We ended up going for one of his bed in the boxes. Some of them are more expensive than others. We researched some like purple, and Casper, and settled on Bear. What colors to go with bear is the 20 year guarantee, in the 100 nights sleep trial,.
We love it. Some are more expensive than others. Some people go to a show room and try them out and then order than directly from the company. Ours came with three pillows and sheets. Show rooms around here have sales people that work on commission so every time you turn around they’re asking if you want help. Amazon has some cheaper ones I don’t know how they stock up though.n

Ive got a pine bed frame given to me years ago when I moved into my own flat..lasted years...can be broken down into parts if needed and then just get a really good mattress. That way you can save money on the frame..as long as its solid wood it will be good brand new or second hand and then invest in a really good new mattress for the best price you can get for it

I wish I could give away my full-size platform frame and mattress so that I can get a twin bed and platform frame in its place. I'd have more room in my bedroom/office. I miss my twin bed. I'm considering getting a new twin and giving my full away. But I'm afraid of the covid thing, bedbugs, and other disasters that could happen during this pandemic when buying a bed online. I don't dare go into a store. I'll probably not buy a bed at all and just deal with the one I have. I was thinking about this for a long time though.

Full size (or double) is too small imho. Our guest bed is full size and I think it’s not enough unless people are very petite. Queen is nice even if you are single. For a king you do have to have a huge bedroom. Our bedroom is actually large but weirdly shaped so there’s no where to fit king.

The bed we have now i bought for myself before art van went out of business. I did lay on it to try. We have memory foam bed, it’s comfy but it’s awful hot to sleep on so our next one will be something else. My nephew and his wife have ikea bed, they like it

Don't buy a twin size sleep number bed if you use weighted blankets.

My sleep number bed could never carry them and the bed always ended up deflating. Now I use my moms 22 year old queen bed because she got my aunts memory foam bed. I tried the memory foam one out for a couple months but it was very hot so we switched back.

I went into the store for my bed. It was abour $1300 for the bed and boxspring but I was buying an expensive brand in general. I paid $42 a month for about 2 years.

Where I live there is only one furniture store, and I'm not sure how a bed bought online would work.

Yeah I paid probably 1500 and it came with free tv. We since got a bigger tv but that one served the purpose, it was good. I loved art van. Too bad it’s gone

I have a memory foam bed and I’ll never get another. It’s too hot for one thing. I went to the mattress store but next time I think I’d use bed in a box. If they come with 20 year warranty that’s fantastic!

Mine is a bit too high I have a set of steps I use. They sell them at target in the children's area, I think they are meant for kids to reach the sink. Mine are pine and look nice. I get the steps years ago but I’m sure they still sell them.

To me it's a bit like buying a car. Spend little, spend a lot.

Newer beds tend to be higher. Something you realise when shopping for bed sheets, especially fitted ones that come in different depths. Personally, I don't like memory foam. I much prefer a conventional mattress, adding a topper.

There's nothing wrong with buying a brand new bed online. Here in the UK, they are delivered from the manufacturer either to store or direct to customer. You'd be very unlucky if you got bugs, etc from these. Measurements are included on websites so cuts the embarrassment of not fitting the room, lol! I've bought an armchair online and plan to get matching sofa. Cheaper than going into store.

I have a good quality double. Enough room, just, to get round it. Problem arises when I want to turn the mattress. Whole job takes 30 minutes. Have to close the door so ensure I have phone with me as you can guarantee someone will call in the middle of the job!!

Good luck

I like sleeping in a queen even though I'm the only one in the bed. My current one I got before Covid. I went to a mattress store and tried it out, and they threw in the bed frame for free. I got an adjustable bedframe, so I can raise the head a bit. This helps because with my allergies I tend to cough a lot if I lie flat.

Most places that sell mattresses in the US will work out a payment plan for you if you can't afford to pay for everything up front.

I just tried to find my receipt from when I got the mattress and frame in 2019, but I can't. I spent somewhere between $1000 and $2000 on it. Because I have good credit, I was able to get an interest free payment plan and paid it off in 6 months.

It sounds like everyone had a bad time with a memory foam. I will take note of that and avoid it. I have that same problem with pillows. I also need to pay top dollar for quality pillows. Posh, I'm still unsure of buying a mattress online, but that's not to say I won't look into it. Downandlonely, I have the means to pay upfront, my biggest issue is getting the bed delivered on time. Can anyone else vouch for Casper? Another big issue is not trying out the mattress, I need to know I'll love it. Like another member said, spend a little or a lot, and I'm willing to pay top dollar as long as my next house doesn't burn down for a third time😡😡😡

Oh! Any recommendations for top dollar firm side sleeper pillows? 🤣🤣🤣

My big thing with pillows is I like a lot of height and a super firm density. Nothing that's gonna be all squishy in a month or two hahaha 😂😂😂

I looked online for mattresses and a lot of them get rolled up and shoved in a box and then you have to let it set for 72 hours before using them...No.

And even brands like Casper use either a layer of memory foam or gel memory foam.

So I will need to buy my bed from the furniture store...I can't wait for the bed when I move in to ship or to let it sit for three days, I need a bed delivered ASAP and be good to go when it arrives.

If you want an inexpensive frame, Craigslist can be a great source. As for mattresses, it really is good to test out some in person, unless it's for a spare room, which I know it isn't. IKEA has reasonably priced ones. Or look for some major mattress warehouse type place. You know, some place called like "Mattress City" or similar. They may have a New Years sale going on. It's possible that a place like Sears (if there is one near you) may have some.

I wish I knew! I have seen some decent-looking beds on Amazon.
