In July (hopefully!), I'll be meeting someone who has joined the hobby site where I write a blog. Due to covid restrictions, the airline he works for hasn't resumed their usual service into my local airport yet.
He'll only be here for one night. It's likely that we'll go out for dinner. As I'll be driving, should I offer to pay half of the restaurant bill, or consider I've given my contribution by using my car for the evening. It's not a big deal but don't want to embarrass him (or me!). I'm used to going out in a friends group where we all pay our share of the bill. Your advice welcome!! ![]() |

If I were you, I think Id be offering to pay my share. Just so it doesnt get awkward.

Can you ask for separate checks so you pay for your dinner and he pays for his? If not I would offer to pay half.

I usually go for separate checks. Otherwise, it seems like a date.

I’d offer to pay a half or ask for separate check.

I would definitely pay your share and don't ask for any gas money. He's not a date, like other's said, and he is flying in which is a good couple hundred dollars. I would help him out and be as hospitable as possible.

Thanks everyone.
Can I just clarify that the flying in is his job, so he's actually being paid to do it! That includes his overnight accommodation too. I'm all for doing the decent thing so was erring on side of offering to split the bill. Am not the type of person to base decision on what he probably earns ![]() |
