As some of you may know, i live in a boarding house in downtown Toronto. It's 1 house in a row of 4 connected houses, that make up the community.
The other day, the staff person said that they were having a bed bug outbreak in one of the men's houses and were having it sprayed. Today at breakfast, one of the women in my house said she'd discovered 2 in her room. This is really freaking me out, as bed bugs are one of my worst nightmares. I really hope the exterminator is able to nip this in the bud quickly. |

Oh splitimage, I am so sorry you have to deal with that! Yes, hopefully the exterminators will be swift and nip them right in the bud.

Ick! Hope the exterminators get them. Will you have to stay somewhere else for a few days?

Thanks everyone.
@downandlonely No I won't likely have to move someplace else. They only had to have people do that, years ago when they had a really bad outbreak that required really intensive treatment. I talked with a friend who had an experience with bed bugs in his condo, and he told me how to pretreat my room and what powder to put down to discourage them, so I'll tackle that next week. |

Dichotomous(sp?) clay? While i was researching this late last year when the outgoing manager "warned" me i was going to have to move (ended up being a 10 pct rent raise - the way he was going on, i expected at LEAST 30 pct), i learned that some bugs cant climb over it, so you spread it in various places around the room.

@unaluna, Yes that's what I'm talking about - don't know how to spell it either. My friend says the edges of the powder grains are really sharp and basically slice the bugs to death.
I haven't heard anything more about them being discovered so I'm feeling a little bit hopeful. |

If they haven't found more, that sounds like good news.

Frig, I saw one crossing my sheets last night, so I squished it. I stripped the bed and lifted up the mattress but I didn't see any more so I'm hoping it's just a stray, but I let staff move.
I have to wait until I get paid Fri. to go get the treatment supplies and I'm going to take all my t-shirts that are currently out on a shelf, wash them and put them in plastic bins that seal. I don't know when the exterminator is next scheduled to come in, but I hope it's soon. |

Thanks @downandlonely
The maintenance person came and inspected my room yesterday and didn't see any sign of them, so they think it was a random stray that I might have brought in on my clothes. But they're having the exterminator come check my room on Friday morning, They've said he probably won't spray, but will put down the earth and put traps on the legs of my beds. I still have to do a fair bit of prep, but the maintenance guy is going to come by tomorrow morning to help me move things and get ready. I'm really happy how on top of things staff have been. |

The exterminator decide to do a full spray treatment on my room after all, which I'm kind of happy about.
But they said I had to treat all my clothes. That meant I had to put all my clothes in the dryer for 60 min. on high heat. It took all day as I had 11 loads to do. I didn't quite realize how many t-shirts I own LOL. So today it's just putting stuff back in my room. I'm really happy with how quickly staff acted, |

Wow, I don't think I have that many clothes.
What about clothes that the dryer will ruin? I can't put my nice clothes in there. |

@downandlonely, I didn't think I had that many clothes either - it was mainly the T-shirt volume that surprised me. I don't have any really expensive clothes that couldn't go in the dryer, but if I did, I'd have bagged them in a plastic bag and taken them to the dryer. Plus a few of my loads were my bedding which also had to be treated.
Now it's wait and see. |
