Her death is getting more attention here than I would have expected considering we are so far away and not part of the Commonwealth. Our most important connection is the Ford Galaxie that she gave to us when she visited in 1968. Quite an unattractive car, but it is used for many official events like Presidential inaugurations. Every time we hear about the Queen's gift.

rv, What do you think of King Charles? Do you think he'll be a good King?

I think he’ll be butting heads. The queen was very careful to keep from having political leanings. But Charles leans left and is very pro climate change and the government is currently in the conservative side. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

He announced a couple of days ago that he will not be engaging in any "political controversy." It will be interesting to observe.

It will be a wait and see in regards to Charles the king. I think it is very poor form for many of the commonwealth countries (including mine) to be discussing a breaking away. Sheesh at least wait until her body has been laid to rest.

Yes! It's in terribly poor taste to discuss political agendas, or to try and use this point in time to grandstand regarding one's latest "urgent cause".
I knew a lot of people would disregard this principle and carry on like fools, anyway. But they really make themselves look completely uncouth, insensitive, and hypocritical by doing so. I would naturally like to see Charles do well. I don't personally care much for him...he's done so many downright misguided things. But then he's also done surprisingly well with his causes, and in carrying on raising those two young men. I know very well what monarchy means to so many people here in Canada. It provides comfort, support, and continuity to many many people. I would hate to see it abandoned prematurely. |

It has taken me a long, long time to warm up to Charles. I do believe he's a very sensitive, thoughtful man - thoughtful about life in general, I mean. The "big questions." I recognize that he and Camilla have been - are - deeply in love, and that his marriage with Princess Diana was an example of the last bit of the mind-set of "old world" monarchy. I so admired the Queen for adapting and changing after Princess Diana's death. Despite their obvious adoration of each other I've had, maybe still do a bit have, a difficult time with what Camilla did to Diana. But then, I absolutely adored Diana. And we were married at roughly the same time - both of us quite naive and to much older men. She and I were pregnant, both times, at almost the same ages. I just identified so strongly with her and with how she was treated by her husband's "people." But then, Camilla has more than proven her ability to "be a royal." And so has Charles. He's truly come a long, long way from being a lost boy to being a dignified man, and hopefully, a highly respected King. And as you point out MG, Charles did a heroic job with raising his sons.

What a good post @*Beth*!!
You sure had some similarities with Diana... wow! I liked her very much, as well... I was so upset when she died. As for Charles, he could've not said "my darling wife, Camilla" during his first address as king, as I thought of Diana then. He could've just said "my wife, Camilla". That would've been more appropriate, imo. I'm not sure how I feel about his being king... perhaps he ought to have let the crown go to William. |

I completely agree. It seemed like he was trying to convince the public of how absolutely wonderful Camilla is, despite everything. Frankly, I was hoping that Charles would pass the crown to Prince William, but I didn't expect him to. And Kate, the Princess of Wales, would be an absolutely amazing Queen Consort.

I don't trust Meghan. I didn't from the moment I saw her. I'm concerned that she doesn't have a solid, healthy "core" to her personality, and I'm concerned about her ability to be a strength for Harry, and suspicious about the ability she'll have to be a mother. Harry...I like him very much and I feel sorry for him. I do believe he has mental health problems, maybe partly inherited or absorbed from Diana, and surely because of her death when he was so young. She was such a warm, affectionate mom. Although Charles did a good job of continuing to raise his sons, the fact is that he had not placed their well-being before his own. That fact is immensely damaging to a child. But who am I to judge. No one is perfect, that's for sure. I guess...well, the entire situation with Diana was a tragic mess and somehow I feel that Harry got the brunt of it all.
