Which decade and what are some things you remember about the decade you were born in?
I was born in '62, just a few days before '63. The clearest memories I have are of pulling my father's desk calendar out of a drawer and the calendar said 1966 in big, black numbers. Another very vivid memory was sitting in my sister's candy-apple red Mustang convertible while we drove here and there. She had a box of 8-track tapes and I liked to pull them out and look at the pictures on the fronts (the album covers). I remember when she popped in a tape and I heard The Doors for the first time. That was in 1965. I have loved The Doors ever since, and have visited Jim Morrison's grave in Paris. I remember a man coming to our house to fix the dishwasher. He told my mom he'd just come back "from 'Nam." That was the first mention I recall hearing of the Vietnam war. For some reason I felt afraid when I heard him say it. It was 1969. __________________ |

I’m a 90s kid too… born in the 80s. I think the 90s were a good era… we got to avoid the height of the internet and social media and mobile phones but we still got to experience them towards the end of the 90s.
I remember after school spending nights on the landline (the old phones connected to the wall sockets) with a huge extension cord so I could take it to my bedroom and talking to my friends for hours. We’d been at school together all day but still had so much to talk about. Those were good days! And going to the fish and chip shop after school and getting hot chips with vinegar on them and sharing them with our friends. Only cost $2 for a big bag and we’d all sit on the grass eating them. Lots of good memories! I don’t remember much of the 80s but the 90s is where I did my growing up. I’m glad I didn’t grow up in the age of social media and smart phones! |

I was born in 1993 but I grew up in the early 2000's. So I grew up with the internet and cellphones. But not social media the way it is now, or smart phones. There was Myspace in 2006. I remember in 2006 we had to have an assembly at my Jr. High about internet safety since thats when social media was starting to take off. I remember when Youtube and Facebook were created.

I was born in 1994
I remember hit clips, they were these little tiny portable things like the size of a tomagatchi pet electronic device that you could buy little tiny little plastic square CD things you could insert into it and it would play a single song, I had some by Britney Spears, *NSYNC , and the Backstreet Boys I remember tomagatchi pets, scholastic book fairs at school (my favorite), easy bake ovens, Nickelodeon cartoons, light brites, Pokémon (still a big fan and the Pokémon franchise is still going strong today!), furbies (those weird sometimes creepy little furry animatronic type toys), robo dogs, Mario, the legend of Zelda Ocarina of time on the Nintendo 64 I also remember September 11th, 2001. I was only like 7 years old then, I remember being in school in the morning and the teachers putting the news on when it was happening I also remember schools having Halloween dress up days when I was a little kid. We’d also have a Halloween parade where we’d all dress up and walk through the neighborhood in our costumes. I distinctly remember dressing up as a tooth fairy on year. The costume was so adorable thinking back now. I wish I had pictures. I loved it. My mom also helped make wings for it. I remember being in a Christmas parade as well What else, I guess when the original iPods first came out before iPhones. I also have vivid memories of learning violin because I took violin lessons at school when I was in 3rd grade till 7th or 8th grade I kind of miss the time before social media took over. I feel like I had less FOMO (fear of missing out) I felt more peaceful. I feel it’s good but at the same time a little overwhelming. Your description of the 90's is excellent. No heavy tech. I'm sure glad that while I was growing up we were free to spend almost all the time we wanted (aside from school) outside. Even when we were teens we were hanging around outside in our neighborhood, parks, cemeteries. I'm pleased that the internet didn't happen until my kids were past their very young years, as was for you, too. No cell phones, thankfully. Oooh, the fish & chips sound so delicious. When I was in Dublin I went to a shop and bought some. I was amazed at how large the fish were! Twice the size of the fish here. And the chips were lovely. And of course, with vinegar. What a fun memory for you, unlived. I still use a landline, haha. The phone is cordless. I am not a "phone person" and never have much gotten into using a cell phone. I'm glad I have it for a few reasons, but I seldom use it. Thank you for sharing your memories. __________________ |

I loved MySpace because there was such a focus on music. I joined Facebook when it was a year old, but it never held the comfort for me that MySpace did. I love YouTube, though. __________________ |

I was born in the late 60s so I grew up during the 70s and 80s.
One good memory I have of the 70s was that my father taught me to ride a bike then. It's really the only happy memory I have of him. I also remember the arcades, with space invaders and Pacman. A friend of mine had an Atari game system and I remember being amazed with Pong! Then he got some other games and we played those too. I remember the big hair days of the 80s and the beginning of music videos on TV, renting videos from blockbuster, the space shuttle disaster, and Regan. I can't say the 80s were a happy time but there are some nice memories there. __________________ * Dx: Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorder * Rx: Remeron, Prozac, Klonopin, Vraylar My avatar picture is a photo of the Whirlpool Galaxy I took in April 2023. I was born in 1982. I remember we got the original Nintendo system with Mario. In the 80s, I didn't watch much TV: just Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers. I was in my first community theater play at around 6.

‘Twas born the late 50’s. My earliest memory is of vacationing on the old farm up north. The kitchen had a single hand pump for water. There was an out house and a dug out cellar with homemade canned food. The table was a Crome and red marble affair and I could hear, because I remember the sound of cricket’s songs.
I remember playing red light, green light in the long evenings. Cap guns the smell of the spent caps. Riding my older sisters hand-me-down too big bike. Entering completely child run pageants. Mum’s on the party lines all of them working together to keep an eye on the neighborhood and kids. The evening news going on about war and vividly recall the footage of the little girl running down the road in pain and talks of agent orange. The woman from Kent state screaming. The hubbub of hippies and communes. On a happier note my oldest sister buying her first car after graduation, a baby blue mustang, and going off to a new life. Drive in movies on summer nights. Snow forts and igloos in the winter. Mostly I remember my pony and my dog, we spent many an afternoon just wondering the country side with a can or two of mandarin oranges for a lunch supplemented with wild rhubarb and other plants. And oh, not to forget! The Kennedy assassin, watching the funeral on tv and seeing a little boy around my age solemnly walking in his suit. I didn’t really understand but was struck by sadness for him. Then later the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther king. The duck and cover drills in school. And girls being required to wear skirts and dresses even in winter. __________________ Nammu …Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. My dad also taught me to ride a bike...before he disclosed to my mom that he was leaving their 25 years marriage to marry another woman and the whole family, including my life, fell apart. I'm so sorry you had a rotten experience with your father, Scooter. Oh, arcades were wild! And my mom bought a new TV was I was a teen and it had Pong on it. I loved it & got really good at it. Pong was kind-of calming, actually. Yay for big hair! I was definitely guilty of that MTV...what a massive change to the music industry, and wow, do I miss Blocbuster. Sadly, I, too, remember the space shuttle disaster. It happened on my husband's birthday, so it turned out to be a solemn day for us. And Reagan, . Good memories, Scooter. Thanks for sharing them! __________________ |

I was hoping you'd chime in on this thread, Nammu. Your earliest memory of the farm sounds charming. The pump and the outhouse. Do you know, those vintage chrome and red table & chairs sets are coveted nowadays by Millennials? Those tables are hard to come by and cost a small fortune. Your wonderful memories, both the good and sad, create a beautiful story. Like watching a movie. I was only 11 months old when JFK was assassinated, but I remember my family, especially my oldest sister who had campaigned locally for Bobby, sobbing when he was assassinated. What a terrible day that was. A tremendous loss of hope. Ugh, we had the duck and cover drills, too. So silly! I mean if Russia had dropped a nuclear bomb on us I doubt us ducking and covering would have saved us. Dresses - when I was in first grade, the teacher pinned notes to each of our shirts (or bodices). When I showed the note to my mom she told me that now I was allowed to wear pants to school if I wanted to. I sure remember the excitement of that! And of course, the hippie movement was centralized here. My WWII generation dad, who was politically very liberal, still couldn't find peace with hippies. He had a business in San Fran and one day while we were driving through the Haight-Ashbury district he commented, "Well, a bar of soap wouldn't cost them much!" Then my mom said, "I suppose not." Thank you, Nammu __________________ |

Oh, yes...those are all very familiar to me. All of them. And of course, the rock music that is now referred to as "classic rock." Eggs pantyhose were the best. I was in high school during the tremendous "Woman's Lib" movement. I'd always hated wearing a bra, wasn't "well endowed" anyway, so I gave up wearing a bra. To this day I wear hemp or hemp cotton bra, which is so comfortable. On a very rare occasion when have to wear a real bra ...grrr. __________________ |

No, I don't remember the name of the cherry game, but I can envision the little basket and the cherries. I will check around online when I have a moment, I'll bet I can find the name of that game. I didn't like battleship, but I played with the boxing robots on a store display. __________________ |
