Wouldn't this be a good title for a horror novel?

The cap on the chimney for my fireplace blew off in a windstorm. Haven't found someone to replace it yet which means the chimney is open to the outside world.

Friday night I heard crashing and banging in the chimney. Scared the poo out of me at first. Ran over and closed the flue before whatever made it to the fireplace. It was fun watching Hazel and the cats trying to figure out what was making the noise.

I was going to make a joke about the joys of country living, but guess this could happen in the city too.

@lizardlady l hope it is nothing serious. It could be part of the liner that fell off. If so it is worth checking if the chimney is blocked partially before starting a fire. With a blocked chimney the smoke fills the house.

Hope it is nothing costly to fix. All the best. CANDC

@CANDC, no worries the chimney is clear. I can see the sun shining down it. I believe some kind of critter got in the chimney the other night. Should have seen me when I opened the flue the next day. I was half expecting some critter to come tumbling out.

I don't think replacing the cap will be a big deal. I could probably do it myself. I don't get on the roof anymore. After a lifetime of doing things for myself I've reached an age and level of tiredness I'm willing to let someone else do some things.

First thing I had put on my chimney was a cap cause I kept having birds show up in the fireplace & then chased around the house to get them back outside. I am surprised mine has stayed in in some of the 80mph winds we have had. I have a double chimney. One flu into the basement fireplace & one for the family room fireplace right over it. Lol.... I understand your wondering what was going to fall out of there.

Glad I had the cap on when I had the trees close to my house & saw raccoons up there a few times. They never touched the roof guess just exploring. Never know what we might be up there.

I can't use my family room fireplace until the cement around the fire box gets repaired. Found chunks of cement inside the fireplace & can see where they are breaking off from
