I had a son-in-law of a friend of mine renovate my house. He doesn't seem to be honest and is not really doing a good job. Should I involve my friend?

Tricky. It could cost you the friendship? I take it you’ve tried to resolve the issue with the contractor first but this has not been successful. Depending on how big the issue is - I don’t know if we’re talking about something worth a few hundred or a few thousand - you may need to take it through professionals.

Is the person a licenced contractor? If this is a really big job being done I would probably do a stop work order until the issues get resolved or you let him know you no longer need his services. I do not tolerate paying for bad work quality & I have reported bad jobs & companies to the BBB. I would not involve your friend because the business transaction is between you & the person doing the work even if he is the SIL of your friend.
If your friend ever asks what happened I would say why but not involve him in the problem you are having. I had several similar situations in my life dealing with work on my house. One guy was an unlicensed HVAC person who a friend got to do the system on the farm he was renovating & the lawyer I had said tge guy was "judgment proof" if I did win a court case against him. 12 years later another licenced HVAC company that had been involved told me the unlicensed guy did jail time for doing the crooked work without a license. Don't mess around with them especially if they have no insurance to cover any damage they cause either. Always beware of who you have working on your house even if tgey are related to a friend __________________  Leo's favorite place was in the passenger seat of my truck. I would not involve your friend. Other than being the one to give you the referral they have nothing to do with the work.
First step would be to speak directly to the son in law about the problems you see. Try to get him to resolve the problems. Is the son in law a licensed contractor? If he is and does not solve the problem report him to his licensure board. If he does not resolve the problems I would also post reviews at places like Yelp. |

Maybe not so much "involve" your friend but for situational awareness, just tell him/her. People talk and it's going to get back to your friend anyway.
