Not sure how many other Floridians are here. Wanted to check how everyone is. Actually, not just folks in Florida. Seems like Helene is bearing up most of the southeastern US. Hoping everyone is safe.
We lucked out here at the farm. We are far enough from the coast that storm surge is not a problem. Had some rain and wind. Some of the wind gusts were pretty spooky. Real wind didn't get here until after dark. That was kind of scary. Brought back bad memories of Ian a few years ago. All and all I have to say Mom Nature was kind to me unlike some friends of mine who live on a barrier island and did not evacuate. The entire property their condo is on flooded. Water in the parking lot was waist deep. Their car is ruined. Luckily their unit is on the second floor, so no flood water in the house. However, their power is out, no idea when it will come back on. I don't understand why they stayed. They normally evacuate. Authorities were stressing the need to evacuate the barrier islands. Matter of fact they told people who did not leave to write their name and DOB on their arm with permanent marker so they could identify the bodies. |

I live on the opposite coast. We had mostly wind yesterday with some storming and a tornado 40 miles away. Our electric is still on also.

UNA, I don't have Facebook so can't open your link.. Storm surge was exactly what they predicted in my area. Many of the barrier islands in my area were under water. I haven't been able to find any reports from where the storm actually made landfall. My fear is that the destruction is so bad they can't get in to check on people. |

Glad you are okay. I have a friend who lives in Boca. She said all they got was rain and some wind.

The wind & rain started here in central Ky about 7am this morning. Lots of trees down & power co I am with said 18,000 without power. I have had power but a friend up the line from me is out (I am at the end of the line). Also the breeding mare manager at the TB farm next to me is out . No idea how the power company on the other side of the creek has faired. Worst wind here in Ky was in Lexington at 60mph. We have had worse. We seriously have needed the rain

Hard way to get the rain Eskie.
I just saw a report that so far 40 deaths have been reported. However, first responders have not been able to access some areas due to damage/debris. Sadly, there were 5 deaths on barrier Island where my friends live. Some were due to drowning. |

Yes, hard wat to get rain. So sad at the loss of lives if florida. I had heard the storm surge with Helena was going to be one of the worst (up to 5 miles inland). Wouldn't have wanted to stay anywhere close to the water

I think I saw something today that Helene set records for storm surge all up the west coast of the state.
Also start a story about people latching that their power is still out. As someone who has gone without power and water for a week I wanted to smack them. I agree. It is a pain to not have power when the temps are in the 90s. On the other hand power crews can't get into some areas because of flooding, debris and sand drifts 4' to 5'. |

We are having the same power cpmplaints by many here. A friend who is usually on the same power outages as I am said hers won't be back on till Sunday. The TB horse harm next to & behind my farm is still out of power. There are pictures of power poles completely snapped in two. Gusts of wind must have been stronger than 60mph to do that. One strange thing I noticed at one point is that even though the storm came in from the south, the winds were blowing from the north as I sat in my kitchen watching the trees in my woods blowing & rain hitting my house from the North/East. It was definitely a bizzar storm here too

That is weird Eskie. Maybe winds from the north were from the rotation of the storm?
The poor folks at the TB farm. Can't imagine hauling water for that many horses. |

It must have been from the wind rotation. I know about the TB farm. It was where I did foal watch a few years ago & their water is all well water. No electric, no pumping the water. We were never out of electric this long when I was there so no idea where they get water. Thinking they must have a generator connected to the pumping system

There is a mule packing business in NC using mules to pack supplies into areas impacted by Helene. So many roads are washed out this is the only way to get help to people. Bless them. So often populated areas get all/most of the attention while those in the boonies are forgotten.

Well, as happens after a disaster the scumbags and profiteers are showing up.
People dragging water damaged furniture, appliances, etc are being instructed to destroy what they haul out to the curb for garbage collection. It would seem others are going into the area picking this stuff up and selling it without disclosing it was in the flood water. I saw someone here in Florida complaining about calling to ask if he needed help. He wants people to just show up at damaged houses and go to work. As gun happy as some are in this state it sounds like a good way to get shot. Can you imagine surveying everything you own destroyed and a total stranger just starts hauling stuff away. I suppose one could go to an area and offer to help strangers, but I'm not sure how people would react. As the owner of a pick up truck I have helped people I know clean up, then haul the stuff to the dump. These were people I knew though. I didn't just show up at a stranger's house and start carting stuff away. Then there are the scam artists that take a deposit to fix whatever, take a deposit and disappear. |

More wickedness...
Some guy was charging people $500 to drain their swimming pools after they got flooded with saltwater. Next day the pool pops out of the ground. Then there's the scum going into houses and striping what metal they can find (like sinks) to sell for scrap. Then there's the gentleman who spread his belongings out in his yard to dry. People would come in his yard and take things. |

So sad there are people like this in the world when most truly want to help. Those that don't make us not trust anyone
