There's another stinkin' tropical storm/hurricane headed our way. Poor people on the coast spent last week hauling all their damaged stuff out to the street for pick up. Their houses are trashed. Their cars are trashed. Local governments finally got all the sand scraped off the streets. And here comes Milton. side note - is that not the stupidest, wimpiest name for a hurricane?
There are sooo many who were so impacted by Helene I feel badly for complaining, but I'm going to. The days and days of stress leading up to where Helene was going to hit. Now the same for the new one. A few days ago weather people were saying this was no big deal, that we would just get some rain out of it. I called BS on that looking at the long path across the very warm gulf. Predictions now are that it will hit the west side of the state as a xat 3 or 4 storm. I am still dealing with post Covid exhaustion. Just the thought of having to pack to evacuate overwhelms me. The stress of watching to see where it's going and its rating just wears me down. Okay, going to stop my whinging and go do something nice for myself. |

I have relatives that live in Florida they say to us, how can you live in the cold with all that snow? And we say to them how can you live with all the storms? And none of us wants to trade. lol seriously tho, man the storms have been getting worse. I wish you all the good vibes possible and Hope against hope that it will die at sea.

The cone is covering all of Florida. We are preparing on this side also. Yes, spent so much time figuring out Helene and now doing it over again with Milton. It's too soon, too close together.

I did a little bit outside for hurricane prep. Coming so soon after Helene there wasn't much to do because it already got done for Helene.
Spent hours searching online for a hotel room so we can evacuate. Almost everywhere is already booked up. I did find one place further inland that had a room and is "pet friendly". They wanted $25/pet/night. With 6 cats and a dog that's an extra $350 per night on top of the room rate. That's over 1K for two nights. I can't afford that. My plan is to make a decision tomorrow about stay or go. The cone still covers the entire state. They might have a better idea about landfall tomorrow. I'm either going to try and ride it out at home (the idea of that scares the crap out of me) or call a friend who lives north of me and ask to stay with them. They will be okay with me bringing the crew with me. Edit - just spent an hour and a half searching for a hotel room. Found a couple of places, but they don't allow pets. *sigh* Last edited by lizardlady; Oct 06, 2024 at 11:31 PM.. |

Holy carp! Milton went from a cat 1 to a cat 4 overnight!!!! Predicted path is still aiming for my area. Am not panicking, but am scared.
My friends north of here just invited me to stay with them. Unless Milton changes direction today I'm outta here tomorrow morning. |

Now it's a cat 5. Wonder just how far up the wind speeds will increase.

Yep, saw the upgrade to cat 5. Am glad I have a plan. It helped reduce my stress level until I saw the upgrade. I know the critters and I will be okay, but I wonder if I will have a home to come back to.
Folks, I admit I am now scared. Not panicked, but scared. Local TV station showed the local interstate. It is already a parking lot. My plan is to take back roads to get to my friends house. |

Feeling for you Liz. Having another hurricane so close is so cruel. Lets hope that Milton turns out to be something like the cartoon character. Looks scary but couldnt hurt a fly.

Stay safe! I've been through parking lot hurricane evacuations too, slow traffic, no place to gas up or get off the interstate to use a restroom. During the hurricane Rita evacuation in 2005 it took us 8 hr. to drive to my parents' house which is farther inland, a drive that normally takes 1.5 hr. There were people who died in the mass evacuation ahead of the storm, many from heat exhaustion after running out of fuel, water, gas, etc. Be careful evacuating!

Possum, it would be nice if Milton turned out not able to hurt a fly, but I believe he is going to kick our butts.

Thank you Blueberrybook. I will be careful evacuating. It helps to be a country girl. I know all the back roads no one thinks about using.

Thanks Nammu. Gameplan is to give the cats gabepentin a couple of hours before we head out. That should make it easier to get them in carriers. I told them anyone who refuses to go in a carrier will left home to fend for themselves.

Sounds like a plan. Ha ha, as if cats listen to threats! I knew they used benzos on cats didn’t know they used gabby! Wow. A much better alternative.
