. to sleep?

When I moved in here I asked if I could put up a curtain rod and the landlord said yes, but I have to have maintenance put it up. (The reason was never clarified)
I put in my request a month ago and don't have any inkling of when they're coming by. They were supposed to on Monday but that didn't happen.
I bought blackout curtains that should also make the room a little quieter and cooler. I live downtown in a city with essentially hospital lights on the street outside, a lot of other insomniacs that scream and talk loudly on the street of all hours of the night and day, and we're at the 2nd most 90+F days ever recorded here in a summer already. I don't have A/C. We're heading into another stretch of potentially 5+ days of 90+F heat. I've slept so little this summer I'm pretty sure I've been having seizures the past few days and I'm convinced I'm going to have dementia before I'm 45. I'm also fking sick of my CM asking every week "when you getting your curtains up?" like a fking broken record,, swear to God we've wasted 2 hours talking about curtains in the past month instead of, idk, treatment?

Which is worse from a landlord's perspective: intentionally/knowingly putting up a curtain rod against the rules or spending every night screaming on and off and yelling incoherently for hours when my head goes numb, I throw up, and think I'm being amputated by myself or whatever kind of delirious on goings happen only to wake up and have to spend 3 hours cleaning up whatever I threw?

Bugger their ears until they show up for the job Muddy. Ha...though bug 'em gently for the first couple of times. You're a good wordsmith so maybe put a request in writing and present that if they're still slacking. That is if there's a mailbox or office-person you can drop it off to. You need those curtains. Damned feckin weather. Good for lowering noise too like you said.

They’re just hanging from the head of the bed waiting for whenever maintenance comes by.

Literally just need three screws put in the wall for the brackets. I could do it in 5 minutes but noooooo. I might though at this point. I literally put a dent in the wall because the rod has just been in front of the window for a couple months now and I have to move it to sweep every now and then and I dropped it into the wall once. I put up command strips to hang a bed sheet to legally replace curtains and keep the place a little cooler haha.

They'll show up when summer's done. Typical management stuff. On one good note the heat's on it's way out. Here's to a lengthy civilized fall.

Shower curtains rods can be put up without doing any damage to the walls. They are spring-loaded and can be made shorter or longer by twisting the ends in opposite directions. So you can put them up before you go to bed, and remove them before you leave the place. MGMT don't need to know.

I'm not a landlord myself but I've dealt with quite a few landlords -- as a tenant, too, but mostly in the capacity of "maintenance".

My impression is that from the landlord's perspective, the worst outcome would be an unsuccessful attempt at putting up the rod, so that "maintenance" would have to redo it and patch stray holes in the wall. The rules/rental agreement are there both to deter the tenant from doing the damage in the first place, and to justify the landlord's lowering the boom if the tenant should go ahead and cause damage anyway.

Unless the landlord already has a score or two to settle with you, I wouldn't think they'd much mind a successful DIY curtain rod installation. It's a little harder than it looks, though, and you'd need at least some tools. I don't know how your mechanical skills are and how much relevant experience you've had. If you find yourself thinking, "What could possibly go wrong?" and you can't anticipate and prepare for at least 10 or 20 possibilities, your chances of staying out of trouble don't sound all that great.

I'd be happy to talk you through it, but only if you're fairly confident that you won't quickly find it too boring or frustrating.

An alternative might be to ask the landlord nicely if they could estimate how much longer it'll be before maintenance gets around to you.

I'm confident MuddyBoots can install them successfully with the proper tools and guidance.

I don't see any harm in asking for a time estimate. And I'd ask to see where the request is on the priority list. If I felt really cheeky, I'd write a letter, "If they're not up by September 15, I'll do it myself. Absence of a reply indicates acceptance. You have fair warning."

But I'd use the spring-loaded ones for now. If you just bought the screw-in type rods, maybe you can exchange them for the spring-loaded type.
