Picked because I find them interesting... Some interesting quotations to think about....

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising everytime we fall."
-- Confucius --

"When you're depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand. The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you'll start to feel better."
-- Charlie Brown --

"Drugs are not always necessary, but belief in recovery always is."
-- Norman Cousins --

"So often we dwell on the things that seem impossible rather than on the things that are possible.
So often we are depressed by what remains to be done and forget to be thankful for all that has been done."
- - Marian Wright Edelman --

"Fear is conquered by action.
When we challenge our fears, we defeat them.
When we grapple with our difficulties, they lose their hold upon us.
When we dare to face the things which scare us, we open the door to freedom."
-- Author unknown --

Some more... If anyone has some they want to share, by all means post here. Otherwise, I might just share some every once in a while and bump this thread up!

Philo: "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."

Anon: "Everybody loves progress but nobody likes change."

Patrick Overton: "When you come to the edge of all the light you have, and must take a step into the darkness of the unknown, believe that one of two things will happen to you: either there will be something solid for you to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly."

Robert G. Ingersoll (1833-1899): "Happiness is the only good. The time to be happy is now. The place to be happy is here. The way to be happy is to make others so. This creed is somewhat short, but is long enough for this life; long enough for this world. If there is another world, when we get there we can make another creed. But this creed certainly will do for this life."

Thanks Christina. I enjoy reading quotes, and I like your selection Some interesting quotations to think about....

Here's two cents from me...

"Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out." -- Vaclav Havel

"Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes." -- Carl Jung

"...When we long for life without...difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds and diamonds are made under pressure." -- Peter Marshall

Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: You don't give up.
-Anne Lamott-

The more you find out about the world, the more opportunities there are to laugh at it.
Bill Nye, Interview with Wired.com, April 2005

A strong positive mental attitude will create more miracles than any wonder drug.
Patricia Neal

Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.
Carol Burnett (1936 - )

Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better.
King Whitney Jr.

Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy
Norman Vincent Peale (1898 - 1993)

A good friend can tell you what is the matter with you in a minute. He may not seem such a good friend after telling.
Arthur Brisbane, "The Book of Today"

Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation.
George Washington (1732 - 1799)

Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going too fast - you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.
Eddie Cantor (1892 - 1964)

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul.
And sings the tune
Without the words,
and never stops at all.
Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886)

Humor is the great thing, the saving thing. The minute it crops up, all our irritations and resentments slip away and a sunny spirit takes their place.
Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.
Aesop (620 BC - 560 BC), The Lion and the Mouse

I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
Ettiene De Grellet

More quotations!

Do not follow where the path may lead.
Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
Harold R. McAlindon

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

It was a high counsel that I once heard given to a young person, "Always do what you are afraid to do."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The best way out is always through.
Robert Frost

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.
Thomas Jefferson

I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure--which is:
Try to please everybody.
Herbert Bayard Swope

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it.
W.C. Fields

Imagination is more important than knowledge.
Albert Einstein

Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is.
Vince Lombardi

The first step in the acquisition of wisdom is silence, the second listening, the third memory, the fourth practice, the fifth teaching others.
Solomon Ibn Gabriol

A loving heart is the truest wisdom.
Charles Dickens

When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.
Helen Keller

The happiness of life is made up of minute fractions—the little soon-forgotten charities of a kiss, a smile, a kind look, a heartfelt compliment in the disguise of a playful raillery, and the countless other infinitessimals of pleasurable thought and genial feeling.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Happiness depends more on the inward disposition of mind than on outward circumstances.
Benjamin Franklin

Insist on yourself. Never imitate.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

What progress, you ask, have I made? I have begun to be a friend to myself.
Hecato, Greek philosopher

Christina, here's one of my favorites.

"Everything that can be invented has been invented."
- Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, U.S. patent office, 1899 (attributed)

Here's another.

"Vision without implimentation is hallucination."
- Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Edison or both

Make your words sweet, you never know when you will have to eat them.

It's not what you go through that's important, it how you go through it.

Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country!

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.

Character is who you are when no one is looking.

A person reveals his character by nothing so clearly as the joke he resents.

Whatever God's dream about man may be, it seems certain it cannot come true unless man cooperates.

Today you are You, that is truer than true.
There is no one alive who is Youer than You.

Endeavor to be always patient of the faults and imperfections of others for thou has many faults and imperfections of thine own that require forbearance. If thou are not able to make thyself that which thou wishest, how canst thou expect to mold another in conformity to thy will?
Thomas a Kempis (1380 - 1471)

You know a dream is like a river, ever changing as it flows.
And a dreamer's just a vessel that must follow where it goes.
Trying to learn from what's behind you and never knowing what's in store
makes each day a constant battle just to stay between the shores.
And I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry.
Like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my sky.
I'll never reach my destination if I never try,
So I will sail my vessel 'til the river runs dry.
Too many times we stand aside and let the water slip away.
To what we put off 'til tomorrow has now become today.
So don't you sit upon the shore and say you're satisfied.
Choose to chance the rapids and dare to dance the tides.
-Garth Brooks, song "The River" co-written with Victoria Shaw

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, "I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along." . . . You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
-Eleanor Roosevelt

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
Winston Churchill

Happiness is not in our circumstances but in ourselves. It is not something we see, like a rainbow, or feel, like the heat of a fire. Happiness is something we are.
John B. Sheerin

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.
Helen Keller

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.
Denis Waitley

The following is a quote from my supervisor when I wasn't sure if i was in the right career field anymore. I work with people with developmental disabilities.

Some people set out in this field to make a difference, but for all the wrong reasons. They want to have fun, feel that they are a better person for helping, start a revolution – nonetheless it is for their own selfish reasons. What they don’t realize is that at some point they will make a break through. They will touch a heart, a soul, a life – forever. At that very moment they will be hooked, but will still be there for all the wrong reasons. Set out to touch lives and then fulfill selfish reasons. You’ll get a lot further. You’ll make a difference!
