I am not sure if this should be here or in general...but this last week I have found 2 ticks on my dog. Ticks Ticks I never have had to use any products on him for fleas or ticks....I am wondering if others know of any safe NATURAL ways to prevent them? I know how to remove them and not leave any tick in ...I hate to give up our walks and runs but I think that is where he is getting them...ick help and thanks

I only know the newer regular medical stuff from the vet's you put a dab of behind their head. My cats got an infestation 3-4 summers ago and that did the trick.

i hate i hate i hate (ticks)! We went camping and went to the countryside of wisconsin as kids all the time and i was always paranoid of ticks. My mother was bit by one and so was my grandmother, both of them unfort contracted lyme disease. They were really bad off for the longest time now it seems to have chilled. My poor little brother at one time had one that attached itself to his scalp and had to get it removed. EEEEEEEEEEW If its 4 bugs that i cannot stand, its: bees, spiders, june bugs, and ticks!

This is totally unrelated but I almost got Lyme once from a tick, and my mom had it last summer. But anyway, my one cat gets ticks all the time because he is an outdoors cat so I just use the flea and tick stuff you can get from the vet and try to keep him inside.

mandazlle - how do you almost get lyme disease?

i would strongly recommend getting some frontline. it kills all stages of fleas and ticks. in maryland, you have the right species of tick to get lyme disease and your dog can get it too. the tick needs to be on your for 24 hours before the bacteria can be transferred so as long as it doesnt go unnoticed you should be okay but its still a hassel to check constantly. frontline is about 20 bucks a month depending on the size of your dog and its a lot cheaper than treating things like flea anemia and other problems that come along with not using flea and tick prevention.

btw..... flea collars DO NOT WORK!!!!! sorry, i just really hate flea collars. and the flea and tick stuff you buy at krogers doesnt work either. its very ineffective.

Please get some Frontline. If you are going to own dogs, that is part of responsible pet-parenting. Ticks can transmit many diseases and can kill your dogs or cause them neurological damage.

I wont even start about fleas.
Ticks can transmit very serious illnesses.

And if you are *concerned* about the money, (1) you might only have to apply it part of the year depending where you live and (2) think of the money you will be out when you have to take your dog for neurological testing after a tick bite.

Thank you EVERYONE ..Wow I am still reading the replies. I went to a wedding tonight...yep on a Tueday...and am beat..I just got in not too long ago from the dinner. I want to thank all of you...I am mostly looking for natural ways to repell ticks..I WILL use Frontline Plus if need be....But my hope is I will not have to. I have had this dog for 4 years and he has never had fleas or ticks...Before this dog I have had dogs for wow...over 20 years so I am responsible it is just I hate to use the chemicals..Right now that flea and tick med Prometis (sp) is causing a lot of HUMAN and dog issues with breathing and some have died from it...One can google that. I have to keep his vaccinations down to just a few because he is allergic to eggs which is how most vaccines are made..with or in a egg..so he is at risk on any vaccine....But Ticks I know...that their are so many tick born illnesses ...and thanks but money is totally not an issue....is the health of my dog and the chemicals that are killing our pets and us....Its kind of a damned if you do damned if you don't kind of thing. Thus, my quest for a natural method if possible.

On bugs lol ugh..I do hate spiders, centipedes, wasps. bees and now...ticks... Ticks

Thank you all you're very thoughtful and my dog apprecaites you too Ticks

you might talk to your vet about something called Program. Unlike Frontline, its a shot, not a gel or cream that you apply on the back of the neck. They do a shot once every 6 months and it protects from everything that Frontline does. I think it's 50 bucks for 6 months but don't quote me on that as I use Frontline, not Program. That way you don't have to worry about it causing breathing problems with you etc...

there really isnt any natural way to repel them. if there were, we wouldnt have them all over the place. ive always had dogs and grew up in dayton. well in dayton, we never had fleas! then i move down here and all 3 of my cats have gotten tapeworm and i have to keep lucy on frontline now. fleas are crazy rampant around here. maryland it probably gets cold enough over the winter to fully kill them but theyll still get bad. some dogs are just more susceptible to them than others.

Thanks...I have heard of Program but my vet has mentioned that one and he was the one who while talking to himself said...no it it..I think because of all my dogs allergies...IF I use anything it will be Frontline Plus its more short term he said....still...I am very much a natural kind of person..organic foods etc....I kind of worry about everything lol hey thats why I am on this site Ticks Ticks ,Most normal people would just use the frontine and be done with it but for me,,,,,, Ticks...I love my pets very much and we appreciate you and all who are trying to help. I know some people use brewers yeast for fleas and they say it works..but he has had 2 ticks...so no fleas..I wonder why this year...we did have a hard winter...but ?? ya know Ticks

My brain hurts from trying to make him safe
