So he doesn't like me now that I took a bunch of photos (ok, he's not traumatized, but he's not exactly camera happy with sitting still!!)
So this is Miles, my baby (black) rat. I haven't got a clue how old he is... probably around 3 months old.  He's eating some raw broccoli I gave him   Exploring my bed. Which he decided to do his business on... not impressed.  Coming out of the cage... exploring a bit.  Miles: What's THAT?!  Eating a raspberry. Another snack. I spoil him, and I've only had him TWO days!   Miles says goodbye to all... or perhaps "hello". I let him walk on the keyboard... he "typed" ... "guy" ... followed by a bunch of random letters and the 5 repeated... And now he's hiding in his cage because he thinks I'm mean because I've fed him, and played with him... but he doesn't like it when he's picked up from in the cage - but is fine outside of it... *shrug*

Myles is a beautiful rat specimen!!
They really do have quite the personalities don't they? He may not like you reaching in for him because that is HIS home and he is protective of it and himself in there. I strongly suggest putting newspaper down on your bed if you want to let him run around on it.....they could care less where they...well...leave a trail  Hope you have many hours of love and fun with Myles!  sabby |

Actually that does kinda make sense... I know I'm supposed to eventually train him to come to me first... but if he doesn't get used to me now... I'm afraid he'll go totally neurotic.

Oh, one thing about the newspaper....he may decide it's fun to tear it all up....LOL.
Hon, you've only had him for 2 days....give the little guy some time to get to know ya And watch those teeth! I've been bitten by a rat before and those chompers hurt like the dickens.You can never fail with love and patience....having a new roomy is a big change....for both of you sabby |

He's cute, Chris!
 He looks pretty young, too. Don't worry about him "not liking you." It's more that he's just not used to being handled much... yet! "Miles"... classy name! LOL

ooo, we love rats  he does look rather young, he may like to ride around in your top pocket (remember to line the pocket, or use a lab coat or something washable) he'll get used to being handled, all the rats we have owned have been very smart, they like to sleep in the bed with you too & cuddle  also he will toilet train himself, he will pick a corner to use & after he decides which corner, you supply the toileting surface have fun & make sure your tetanus shots are up to date, lol.

Most rodents don't like being picked up from above... that's how their predators catch them. Try slipping your hand underneath his belly and lifting him.
He's so small! I bet he misses his mom. (Yep, even rats have moms.)

Miles is the most skittish animal I've ever met... but he at least likes me enough to take food directly from my hand.
active little bugger... I think he may need a playmate with the amount of running around he does. He doesn't mind as much being picked up today... as long as he's on his way *out* of the cage... otherwise, he still doesn't like it.

Since the day you posted the pics of your rat, I have have looked at the pic everyday. Soooooo cute. I have been on the down side and he brings a smile to my face everytime I look at that cute rat face. Please don't take your pic off. They have been a life saver lately. Congrats on the rat.

Glad they help you (((((((((((((twirls)))))))))))))))) He's getting used to me (sitting in my hood) ... he'll hopefully be getting a friend tomorrow. Even if not, I'll try to take some more pics then if I can, ok? I'm a happy/proud mommy.

So Miles is doing okay at the moment. He's a big boy, with some slight sneezies. I blame the smell of my room and the bedding I'm using potentially.
But... yesterday I bought him a friend. The new friend is a cream-coloured baby rat (at 9 weeks old) whose name is Allan. So we have the 3-4 month old Miles, and a 9 week old baby, Allan now. I'm keeping it at two rats though folks, so don't worry!! Allan gave me a scare with weird breathing when I brought him home yesterday, so I bought him meds and he seems better today. Eating, and less fidgety. I'll post some pics of Allan (and more of Miles) when I get a chance... right now they're both eating, and we just had a thunderstorm and I cleaned their cages... so I'm assuming they'd not appreciate me being in their faces right now. I love my baby boy ratties.
