I'm single and live alone. I have difficulties food shopping and getting enough to last an entire week.
Does anyone have any good meal ideas or shopping ideas for someone who is single and lives alone? Zen888 ![]() |

my onlyy sugestions is plan out your week of meals, when we were on very tight budget i used to say certain meals and only buy what i needed, also try to buy in bulk in some items it can work out cheaper

I don't know if Rite-Aid exists were you live, but if they do then they always have good prices on food.
Depending on how much you eat, a little produce can go a long way for the week. Same thing with eggs (if you like them of course) Or, if you have no preference to cooking your food versus heating it up in a mirowave, leanpockets are pretty darn tasty. Alot of healthy food brands also sell food you can just nuke in the microwave for quick and cheap meals. I'm not a single young adult living on her own here, but that's the info I got from going grocery shopping with my parents for as long as I can remember. |

I'm singe and live alone, and have trouble with food shopping too. One thing I've started doing, is getting a roast - beef or chicken that I cook Sun. night, when I have time, then I can use the leftovers for meals during the week, because all I have to do is reheat the meat and cook some veg.
I find I buy a lot of frozen veg, becasue they don't spoil like fresh veg, and it's just a question of boiling them up. My biggest problem is with fresh fruit / salad stuff, because if it's packaged I often wind up with more than I can eat without it going bad, so I try to buy things like peppers / zuccini one at a time. I really like chicken breasts - I'm willing to pay more to get them boneless & skinless because they bake quickly or are good in a stirfry. I also almost always have a couple of different types of pasta on hand and a jar of spaghetti sauce in the fridge for those days when I want a fast meal. You might want to check out your library / bookstore for cookbooks geared at one or two people. There are a few out there, and I found them helpful for ideas of stuff to make where I didn't have to take a recipe that was for 4 - 6 people and divide it up. --splitimage |

i cook for 9 or 10 a night, however years ago when i lived alone and there weren't so many frozen choices i got a seal a meal thingy and would cook large batches on weekends and then seal i meal size servings and freeze them. better than tv dinners and i could choose between meats and veggies and starches to go together. only problem left was the fresh fruits and veggies, which i usually just did without for a few days a week.

I posted a recipe in the recipe section about a tilapia rice bowl. But you could substitute any meat you wanted for the tilapia if you didn't want fish that day.
I buy the boneless skinless chicken thighs because they are cheaper than the chicken breasts and I think they are smaller and I can usually eat a whole one. I usually cook a cup of rice in chicken broth then use the rest in stir fries, rice bowls, or just add a bit of lunch meat and some cheese. I also cook in bulk and then freeze it in individual containers and I have my own T.V. dinners that are healthier than the processed stuff you get out of the freezer section at the store. If I get fresh fruit or veggies and I think they aren't going to be eaten before they go bad I put them in the freezer in chunks or strips and then I can just pull out what I want for what ever I am cooking at the moment. Frozen fruit is great for a snack or a smoothie, the frozen fruit in a smoothie makes it good and thick. Ice cream can be bought in individual cups that way I'm not tempted to dish up a huge bowl and also am not stuck with a carton that I may not be able to eat before it gets freezer burn. I hope these tips help. Jbug

for fruits and veg since I'm the only one around here that has them regularly they used to spoil a lot. I buy fruit cups and V8, although it adds a bit of sugar and salt (and v8s expensive) it helps
