Hey, I've been trying to get Fozzie Bear to sleep with me on the bed! He has been spending nights in his kennel cage or outside. But lately, he has been barking too much outside, and he's such a sweet boy, I'm hoping to get him accustomed to sleeping on the bed. He's all aflutter! I have managed for the past two nights to keep him here with me on the bed for a couple of hours, but when I have to get up to go to the bathroom, it disturbs him, and so he's back to the cage.
It was actually quite comforting to put my hand on him (after he had finally settled down!) and feel his rhythmic breathing. I hope I can train him to be with me during the night!
Oh, and he's a big boy already, at 5 months. His profile is becoming more and more like a golden looking German Shepherd. So smart too.

Thanks, Bebop! His mere weight is comforting next to me! and he's going to be bigger and bigger! Having him near me is much better than hearing him bark outside (as he is doing just now!), and he will like this much better than the kennel cage when he gets used to it!

Are you prepared for jealousy if you try to replace him with a human?

Be carefull what you wish for...I have a queen bed and fight hard for my space..Two 90lb. Golden Retreivers with a deep love for soft matresses make competitive bed fellows....

If you want him on the bed,,,turn the heat down low...He'll be there...

We have a similar problem. Daisy and Heidi learned that they like the bed. When we wake up in the morning, Daisy is keeping my wife's feet warm, and Heidi is between the two of us. Heidi is a very jealous dog. If my wife and I are sitting on the couch next to each other, she has to come between us. It can be a problem.

LOL - I thought you were going to be talking about a man and I was going to suggest that you just kick him out of the bed while he is a sleep if he could not mend to your ways in the bed......

LOL, y'all! I love hearing your feedback and stories on the sleeping arrangements with your canine friends!
Fozzie can only manage a couple of hours in the bed, finally quietening down. He's between 5 and 6 months old and already a big stocky fella..I'm guessing over 50 lb. easily. I just wish he would settle down for the night, since I can't put him out in the back yard because he barks at odd hours and wakes me, and I'm sure, the neighbors! So he must go in his kennel cage when he gets up.
And, Pachy, no man is vying for space in my bed, LOL!

Shepherds are the best! My father's German Shepherd thought it was his job to watch over me and my sister. He wouldn't go to sleep until everyone was in bed, then he'd plop down between my room and my parents room and let out a big sigh.

When I was older, I came home late one night and tried to tip-toe to my bedroom. Storm met me at the front door and growled at me all the way to my bedroom - sounded like a gumpy old man. After I got into bed, he plopped down and let out a big sigh.

My previous dog was a German Shepherd. When my son was in grammar school, she'd park herself at the window every afternoon and wait for him. As soon as she'd see him approaching, she'd run to her toybox, grab her teddy bear and greet him at the door.

A few hours later she knew it would be time for my husband to come home, so she'd park herself at the window and wait for his car. When he pulled up, she'd run to the hamper to find one of his dirty socks. He didn't wear slippers, so I guess it was the next best thing.

We have a HUGE Bernese Mountain Dog now - 140 lbs. She doesn't like thunderstorms, so she climbs into bed and squeezes in between me and my husband - nearly pushing us off. She takes up so much room, we had to get a king-size bed. She snores as loud as my husband, so it's quite the concert.

Jbug...that is too funny about your kitty sleeping on the hard headboard. I think he watches over you!
KathyM! I am so SO jealous! A Bernese Mtn Dog is my favorite dog of all time. I wanted on so badly, and contacted several breeders for a puppy, but all were far away from me, and I didn't want to have one shipped, also they were very expensive! I love your stories of growing up with the GSD!

Last night was quite an experience. I went to bed early, two cats and Fozzie bear vying for bed space. There was a football game going nearby, and Fozzie was all aflutter from the noises of the band and the loudspeaker, which I could barely hear, but he was hearing it ALL! When the game ended, and all quiet, he settled down and immediately began snoozing...for a while. That lasted a couple of hours, but then when I got up to go to the bathroom, he was up again, so he went to his kennel cage. He doesn't seem to mind that, but I do wish he'd settle down for the night with me!
Love

Thanks Patty. I'm sure he will after he grows out of his "toddler" stage.

I traveled downstate to visit an old friend who breeds BMD's. I knew nothing about them or even what they looked like. All I knew was she had five of them, and a mutt. We were sitting outside when a dog came running up, and my first thought was "What a BEAUTIFUL mutt!!" The other four came running out, and I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

I wanted one real bad, but my Shepherd was in her golden years - didn't feel right to introduce a rambunctious puppy at that time. For the next three years I was like a dirty old man....running to the internet to look at pictures of BMDs behind my dog's back. I fell in love with a puppy by the name of Elvis, whose markings were perfect.

After my Shepherd passed away, I contacted my friend but she had no puppies. She referred me to her friend, who was the president of the Midwest BMD Assn. The interview process was incredible - felt like I was adopting a child, lol. The woman wanted to know EVERYTHING about my life, even though my friend downstate recommended me and had known me 30 years. After hours on the phone, she said I could have one of her pups - but she would be making the choice.

When the pups were ready, we traveled up to pick up our new baby girl "Geneva." We met on her patio. After looking through all the photo albums of her ancestors, we met her parents. The male came out and snuggled up to me. The female came running out and jumped into my husbands lap.

Then it was time to meet Geneva. I nearly fainted when she brought her out. I had never mentioned markings. Geneva looked exactly like that puppy Elvis I'd been drooling over! She was only 12 lbs and fit nicely on my lap - now she's bigger than me by 20 lbs!

She comes from a show competition family, but she's not a show dog. She's a comfort dog, and a GREAT companion.

I have a Birman cat too, but Geneva doesn't like it when the cat sleeps on the bed with us. Geneva will casually stretch and push the cat off the bed with her head.

Is that your Foozie Bear in the pic? He's ADORABLE! I wish for you many happy years together.

Over the weekend, Fozzie did sleep either on the bed or on the floor next to the bed thru the night. He is a good partner!
