I'm working on a multicoloured cotton scarf right now. I just learned knitting last year, so all I've made so far is scarves. But I'm taking a course at a knitting store next month to learn how to knit hats.

Right off the top of my head I can't tell you any sites, but I'll check through all of my saved sites and put them here later. We (husband and I) are getting ready for a 5 hour road trip to my daughter's so it may be a few days before I get back in touch or it might be tonight.

When and where did you first learn to knit. It really relaxes me to knit, so it might just help with your anxiety. There is something therapeutic about working with soft yarn and having something practical to wear when you are done.

I didn't think I'd be able to learn socks. That was my challenge a few years ago and now I wonder what my next challenge will be. My first pair was worked, frogged, reworked, frogged and re-reworked a few times before I got both socks to be a real pair

I learned when we lived in England. DH was in Air Force and stationed there. I picked it up again about 4 yrs ago now. Love it.

Hi Splitimage,

What type of scarf is it, one for outdoor warmth or a fashion accent type? I actually made myself a winter scarf this winter. And I'll be using it tommorow when we do our trip up north to visit my daughter. Right now it is like 4 below zero and the wind chill is something like -22F!

Are you using just 1 kind of yarn, and it is a bunch of colors-variagated? Or are you changing yarn each time you do a color change?

You will love the hat making class! When I tried hats a few years ago from the top down to the open part, it was the first time I used 4 double pointed needles. Do you know if you are doing a hat like that or is it from the opening up?

Last year I taught my daughter and her 2 daughers how to knit. Actually it was more like 2 or 3 years ago when the youngest was 7, now she is 10! The oldest is now 15 but the challenge for me was she is left handed! I'll be helping my daughter over then next few days with learning "how to read her knitting" so she can figure out where she is and what comes next, since she attempted a scarf for a christmas gift this year and wants some help finishing it up.

My scarf is more for a fashion accent. I'm using a multicoloured yarn adn knitting it in a basket weave pattern. I've made lots of heavy wool scarves though - When I learned last year I was knitting like crazy and made scarves for all my friends.

I think the hat class is top down - I'm really excited about it. I'm taking it at the same store where I learned to knit.

It was really funny my first scarf, the course was over 2 weekends - the first weekend they showed us how to cast on and knit, and then the second weekend was to cast off and make a fringe, so I had to finish the scarf in a week. I was in a psych hospital at the time, so it kind of became the joke on the ward, that I was always knitting & I kept saying "but I have a deadline". I was really happy with how it turned out.

jeremiahgirl, I don't know of any learn to knit websites. I learned from a book. You could try your local bookstore for a book. Or you could ask at a local craft store if they have knitting classes.

I knit a bit, but currently I'm doing a counted cross-stitch pillow. I also crochet, and I used online video instructions to help jog my memory because it had been a while since I had crocheted.

What Im planning on next is to cast on around a rug hooked sheeps head I made out of my home spun . Im going to make it into a LOO seat cover .

Im going to felt it when Im done.

Great to way to keep the lid down .

Can you see the sheep face ? LOL .

Can't deside if I want to use black yarn or peach colored . maybe a combo .
Then I plan on kniting and felting an oval rug for the floor.

Oh BTW the sheep face I made was made into a bag that went with a pink gingham fare skirt dress i made along with a wig I made out of carded wool . That was my costume for the big holloween street festival In Athens Ohio where I used to live. SE ohio... 1970's ... I had a clothes line prop I made into a big hook and well I got hammered that night and tried to hook the street light with it while I was on some guys shoulders.

Sounds like you are a busy knitter. I have discovered Ravelry.com and in fact have just recently joined. I haven't posted yet, as I'm trying to figure it all out.
I should wear a bib! I bought a hand spindle to
spin" with, but haven't had much luck. I think it is all about practice, practice, practice.

Are you from England originally? "LOO" - haven't heard that for over 35 or so years! My DH was stationed just outside London and we really enjoyed our 3/5 years there.

Right now I'm busy trying to design some more socks. In fact I came up to my computer to print off some free knitter's graft paper and stopped to see what was going on here.

The big hook you made - funny - I had my DH make me huge knitting needles as a prop to teach knitting at one of the local places. I used thick cotton clothes line rope to do the sample. Getting sheep faced is a good thing as Martha would say.

I have been knitting since I was six . I try to have one project going that I can take to a meeting where I can listen and knit .

No I'm not from England. I just like using the word Loo insead of toilet .

I started spinnig from a drop spindel and got my own wheel while workig as an intern on a historical farm . Got to milk cows by hand as well

You have a nice husband to make you large needles . You teach knitting . I keep having that thought come to me all the time to offer that on some level .

I now knit prayer shawls. They work up fairly quickly and its so rewarding to give them .

To felt I recomend just using two bowls one with hot soapy water the other ice cold and just plunge and sweeze plunge and rub. and change the water in both bowls to keep it hot hot and cold cold. Its like your putting life right into a heart . I stuff them with sachet and attach them to my shawls.

Heres a photo of one of my hearts and of the sheep face I free formed hooked . Im in love with this sheep face . Its about 25 years old . the burlap is the remains of the bag portion. I've got circular kneedles started along the outline . Ill wing it from there by increasing.

Martha got that line from me BTW.

What are "glittens" from nepal"? that you have made? I'm guessing part glove part mitten? and the yarn is from nepal? or it is a design from nepal? Sounds complicated to knit anyway. I've done one or two pairs of mitten, but never gloves. Oh, and the wrist warmers too. that is the closest to a glove I've done.

Your sheep face is adorable. I've thought for about 5 years to make a hooked rug for my entry way. But I think about all the hand work, which I'd love to do, but don't really want dirty boots and shoes walking all over it!

I'm not teaching any knitting right now. But I did in what seems a different life time if you know what I mean. I'd love to find a group to sit and knit with around town somewhere. There was one, but the book store where the group meet went out of business well over a year ago. Maybe I'll find one somewhere. I've not really looked. I'm like you, I like to have something portable to take with me. I end up the passanger whenever my husband and I go somewhere - though he gets mad with me if I knit in public. Once I brought my knitting to a collage hockey game! He was so mad he wanted to leave. He got over it, but he does tent to over react with stuff like that. I think it's because he doesn't get how relaxing knitting is.

Prayer shawls? All lacey ones? I've only knitted a few lacy all over patterns but now only in dishclothes or socks. Thanks for the tips on felting. The felted bags I've made I did in the washer. I read a knit blog about someone who used her bath tub and a toilet plunger! I have a finished bag as far as the knitting goes, but it needs felting. It is a cream color and I was planning to do needle felting with fibers after I get around to felting it.

Well, the super bowl is going to be starting soon, and the pumpkin pie should be coming out of the over and cooled just about time for the 2nd quarter! I'm going to see if I can talk my mostly nice hubby into going out for French Vanilla Ice Cream or whipped cream to go with it!

yes, glove mittens. i bought the hat and glittens through fair trade from nepal, and i'm making a scarf to match them.
